The through bolt should be parallel with the flat face on the shaft.

Also look at the spline on the shaft, one groove is missing, this goes in the middle of the split in the knuckle.

From memory, u need a Mk1 steering shaft for a MK2 cause the knuckle is longer in a Mk2 ???????????

I used to find with the pommie ones that the GP4 knuckle was too short for later model MK2 steering columns, usually needed to use a early (pre 1979) column
If you use a MK1 inner column you would need a MK1 steering wheel/boss as well as the spline is different at the top

i've really gotta learn to research these things more before i waste my money.

it's a 1980 mk2, so i presume the shaft will be too short. do i need the entire steering shaft from an earlier mk2, or is the shaft modular?

Try it for size first, you never know it may fit.

Not every one of the later Escorts in the Uk had the short shaft, I guess that is because they may have been built for over a year before being registered, so you may be Ok with yours.

If it doen't fit then a secondhand column from a wreckers would be your easiest and cheapest option

Don't worry too much, I have a 79 RS and the cast Group 4 knuckle fits my shaft (ooh-er) without too many problems (just had to slightly adjust the knuckle a little when I got it). Everything else fits up fine, and I know all the components are original (shaft, steering rack etc)
