Race brakes

I'm currently working my way through a conversion using the mitsubishi version of the sumimoto callipers. These suit a 30mm thick disc but also have different sized pistons. Just have to decide what disc to use. I'll be using VS commodore hubs and the discs will have to a large offset to give clearance for the wheels I want to use.

The best thing about this JUNK setup is that is cost me $200. That includes the hubs and callipers. It's going to get more expensive form here on in though.

I was watching a pair of those Mitsubishi callipers on Ebay.uk and they went for a bargain - I recon <20GBP :shock:

There is no doubt that a nice new set of massive Alcon/AP/Brembo/Other brakes costing most of us many thousands of dollars is the ultimate way to go. However if a dilligent combination of easy to find, cheap to procure and replace OEM parts will provide, maybe only 80 percent of the effect, but for only 20 percent of the expenditure, for most of us that is a bargain worth persuing.
If it does better than what we had for not much more than rebuilding the original stuff that is better again. My volvo conversion cost me less than half a grand, with rebuilt calipers and new disks, bearings and wheel studs. Having the originals rebuilt may cost half that but only provides standard braking. My experience witht he Volvo combination is that it is far superior in every way to the originals an in my opinion, having driven race cars since 1983 gave the best bang for someones buck of them all.
Yes I have recently upgraded to AP's and 2 piece disks, but I was in the right place at the right time and got them very, very cheap. Cheap enough to take the risk that they wont be 100 percent better than the volvos.

Hi Glenn,

Can you tell us about the VS hub conversion? Looks very ineresting. They are a rear flange mount cartridge arrangement arent they?
