Stripped out the interior of my mk2 and found...

...Rust and tar!!

Could someone give me some advice on what I should do to fix this rust just under where the steering wheel column comes through the firewall...




... And also what to do with these tar mats, should I leave them in? The metal underneath the car seems to be solid, but do they attract rust?




I've also got some rust coming through where the heater was due to a build up of leaves, what's the best way of getting the grill off the top so I can clean that crap out?

There is only one way to fix badly rusted steel properly
Cut it out and weld in some new stuff.

Any surface rust though can be cleaned back with wire brushes, sandblasting or even one of those acids that dissolve rust, (but make sure it is all cleaned off afterwards)

I always removed tar pads with scrapers and a knock from a hammer, when they are hard, or with some heat and a scraper when they are stickier.

But someone here (I think it was Roger) recently posted a way of doing it by freezing them, seemed to work really well, so could be worth a go
