Gartrac quick rack and pinion into Mk2 2L Steering rack

Postby Damion Parkin » Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:13 am

Hi all,

I have purchased a quick rack and pinion from Gartrac with the intention of fitting it to my Mk2 2L steering rack assembly.

I pulled the 2L rack apart yesterday and found (not really to my suprise) that the thread on the rack ends from my Aussie 2L rack do not match the threads on the Gartrac rack. I didn't have a chance to look any closer as I had to head home unfortunately.

What do I need to do in order to sort this out? Do I need a capri rack? or can I buy the rack ends from somewhere and use my existing rack housing and drumsticks?

Thanks,

Damion

Hi Damion,
There are two diferent racks fitted to escorts. From memory one is Cam gears and the other is Burman I am not sure which is which but one has a removable plate opposite the input shaft and the other doesn't. you may need the other rack to what you have.

Hi Peter,

My rack is the rack with the removeable plate opposite the input shaft, looks exactly like the item pictured on the Gartrac site: http://gartrac.com/shop/steering-racks- ... -rack.html

Hi Mickas,

I haven't got as far as the Tie Rod end's as yet. Just trying to screw the rack end (if I can call it that) that holds the drum stick on to the rack itself.

Cheers,

Damion

Hi Aaron,

Cheers. I think I have a Mk1 rack amongst the spares at home, I will give it a try when I am back there in a week or two.

forget those "green" tie rod ends
use mk1 imperial thread ends to match capri /twink struts
mk2 rack ends have course threads & nowhere near as
fine adjustment as fine thread for toe in / out adjustments

to make it simple
convert a mk2 rack
by putting mk1 drumsticks on the ends of the rack
not green things on the end of mk2 drumsticks

Hi Steve,

Ok, so I need Mk1 Rack ends.

Next question. I understand that the green tie rod ends have a metric thread to match the drumstick and a taper on the ball joint to match the capri strut?

I still use Mk2 2L struts in my car.. If I go to Mk1 Drumsticks what tie rod ends do I need? Or do I need to make the move to capri struts?

I see that I can buy Mk1 Rack ends off of ebay.. maybe I will buy these and see if the mk1 rack ends will work with the mk2 drumsticks.. baaa.gif

Cheers.

Hi all,

I have bought some Mk1 rack ends that are the correct thread to suit the gartrac rack. Only thing is I need some lock nuts. Does anyone know where I can track some down?

Cheers,

Damion
