The engine is now back together - I'm just waiting on a new torque wrench since I'm a little nervous over my 15yo one after last month’s experiences
While the engine is out i'm upgrading the crossmember too:
I have subsequently spent 3 hours modifying and welding the brand new WCXM to try to neutralise the bump steer by aligning the TCAs and steering arms. Of course I won't know how successful I have been until it's all fitted up and at ride height again!

paul one way to go about this is to drill a fairly large hole thru xmember about where yu reckon it should be then bolt the tcas in with large diam big thick washers on the outside ,then do your wheel align , slacken bolts off slightly to get them perfect then weld the washers into place on the outside & wld thin washers inside to make the hole nice and strong too ! doing it all by measurements is not as perfect as doing it on a wheel alignment machine ps there is also a trick to getting the rack height perfect too pps you have to have the springs set to your desired ride height to acheive all this hope this helps yur cause !
I tried to bolt it all in tonight only to find they have welded the steering rack mounts about 5mm to close to each other!!! If they have that wrong what chance do I have for the engine mounts?
Burtons will be getting yet another snotty email later tonight!
This is why fabricated components from Gartrac, GRP4 etc are more expensive....they actually fit! I had a R.A.C.E. ( Squires) one that fitted perfectly.
I am pretty sure that the Burton's WCXM is actually a Rally Design item ( I note that Burtons also sell a GRP4 Fabrications one that is twice the price) and after buying a Rally Design panhard rod kit years ago and finding that the rod would only fit with the rose joint screwed completely in and without the lock nut I have avoided their products ever since.
PS If the WCXM you have is the GRP4 FAb one then I take it all back
Burtons sell 3 types of WCXM - due to the feeedback on the RD version I avoided the cheapest version!
I'll have to call them tonight and find out what they are going to do - I don't want to start cutting and welding any further if they want it back in "mint" condition.
Burtons claim to just be the retailer and pointed at Kent CAMS. Kent CAMs then passed the issue onto ARP.
A Nigel Atkinson, European Operations, ARP Automotive Racing Products has finally got back to me with: "I have checked with Kent Cams and other customers and even at the old torque figure you should not have had a problem"
At this stage I really think it's not worth pursuing any further - Might be a different story if I was UK based and could knock on some doors.
After speaking to the MD at Burtons last night they have finally got back to me re the WCXM. "i have passed the photos onto our supplier i am still waiting for them to come back to me i dont see that either you or us should pay for shipping back to us as its been made incorrectly"
I then asked if they could send a replacement (GRP4 this time) as my car is out of action... "i cannot do anything with swapping over until the other unit has been returned"
So basically they are waiting on the supplier covering their cost prior to committing to a replacement/refund! Yet more great customer service for the UK
The GRP4 Fab WCXM is the goods it has lowered rack mounts and has two different mounting holes for TCA and is fully welded. I have just received one plus some other goodies.
Thank god its not just me stuffing around with things that don't fit like they should. I'll post up a seperate topic on an Alloy Rocker cover that I bought on Ebay from the UK when I take a couple of comparative pics. Cost was prohibitive after shipping.
Initial disappointment was the gaps around the cam that you could poke a paddle pop stick through. Getting more disillisioned when the back of the rocker cover was touching the join in the firewall, but the 'throw it in the bin moment' was when the oil filler cap was higher then the bonet. Got a bit of feedback from the seller that he tried to make it fit all 3 engines (???) but email went silent when I sent pics and asked for a refund.
There are people who make things happen, people who watch what happened and those who have no idea what happened - which one are you?
