Re: MK1 RS2000 project

It's the weekend - so escort time :D

After finding a load of small stones embedded in my strut top bearing area I decided it might be time to invest in an air-cleaner. The socks I ran initially did cause the engine to run rich and the dyno (old engine) showed a reasonable advantage in not running them. So after much research I have opted for the pipercross KK600 - I have now been shown the ITG version which uses the same base plate so I might try one of those later:

Since everytime I speak with Danny he berates me re my exhaust I have finally got round to fitting the new headers and making my own 2.5" system. So out with the old which looks pretty nasty in the light of day:

and in with the new - this runs down the drivers side so I had to swap the brake lines over on the rear diff which was a bit of a pain. I now have a nice long straight run off the extractors and a mandrel bent curve over the diff. Sounds louder but not too noisy - I have yet to try it under load:

So tomorrow's jobs - fab rear mount for new exhaust, bleed the rear brakes (again), fit the carbies, clean up trip meter wiring, re-fit seats, fit nav door pocket and maybe go for a drive

and it went well today too

Airfilter - this was a bloody tight squeeze:

Pretty much ready to go:

I did another 10Km's today - found several hills to load her up in 3rd. Temp's never passed 80, oil pressure remained high for the duration. On the way back I ran it out to 6000rpm and it got there nice and quickly. The new exhaust sounds nice and crisp - if anything it's quieter than the old 2" system - but that had two fairly major cracks in it and the muffer had been savaged by the trailer.

My engine machinist reckons 50km is all I need to bed the rings and bearings with modern materials and tight tolerances. My Dyno guy wants me to put 1000km's on it, i'm currently at 84km. Any opinions on when I should dump the running in oil and get it tuned properly? - it certainly has plenty of compression now and pulls hard.

Fahley: You need an engine that can breath first

Gen Mk1: Where's that Capri based - i'm still to see any other tiger stripes in WA...

I'm considering going the WCXM route and trying to shift the engine a tad - this current install is lacking the rear lock due to the firewall interfering.

We will see how this engine goes now it has been tuned up properly before diving in head first.

Seems that colour scheme is very popular with the small ford gang.

Paul get another dyno guy!
I start them at home to make sure it runs and has oil pressure
The next time the engine runs for any duration is on a dyno with as much load as it will take!!!!!!!!!!
buy the time you've done a 1000k's you may have missed the opportunity of bedding the rings in properly.
Also bedding bearings in is an old wives tale, all they are there for is to provide a path for the oil and once they've made contact to 'bed' anything it's starting to wear!
If you bed the rings in on a dyno it will be don't within 10 minutes. I leave the breathers off and wait for them to stop breathing and then we're into it.

Danny: That's what I figure too - when it first started it "breathed" a tad heavy. It's now done 20min on the dyno and 80Km's on the road and is breathing clean. So time to swap the oil and and get it back on the dyno to check the top end.

OK. I cannot pick the difference but I am sure there are subtle differences.

Correct - but these are the "motorsport" GTR version so 1.8kg each lighter than the road version...

Yes I would still love some Panasports...
