When you say it failed ....?

More information required, but it is possible that just the hex drive had broken between the dissy and the pump. Of course if that was the case you would have to ask the question what caused it to break ...

If you buy a new pump avoid "high volume" and the brand Mellings.

Gareth it should be the other way round as I got some more HV Mellings pumps while I was at Esslingers!!!!
Nothing wrong with them and they are more stable than others you just have to check the clearences before you screw it on but then again you should be doing that with any pump you buy

I've got one but it's usually the drive or the roll pin for the distributor gear before it's the pump

Well i was driving home from work last night and there was some horrible valvetrain noise. got home, valve cover off and spraybar off, the bar was clean and clear but the head was dry on cylinders 2 and 3. Im going to pull the pump tonight and inspect. May have sourced a new kent cams high pressure pump at a decent price. ill let you all know the results.

There was no oil on the cam lobes on 2 and 3. Possibly caused by the heat created by the centre bearing also not getting oil (where the spray bar attaches) Ive bought this kent cams pump anyway because the motor is old and tired and im just going to replace all accessories along with the buggered bearings while shes apart. Mods may have to move this thread.

one way to check is start it up or wind it over with the rocker cover off
to see what the spray bar is doing ???
sounds very strange you are automaticly blaming the oil pump ??
if the oil pump is rooted it should show up on a simple oil press gauge test

That was the first thing i did when i got the rocker cover off. No oil whatsoever from spraybar. I'm pulling the motor tonight/tomorrow anyway.

If oil is coming out of 2 of the 4 spray bar holes then it sounds like a blockage somewhere maybe. The spray bar is notorious for blocking.

Cheers

Thanks for all your info and help guys. Nice to see such a positive and knowledgeable forum.

reasons i suspected the oil pump - Turned motor, no oil from spraybar
- Removed spraybar and checked, all clear
- Removed distributor and checked for broken hex, all fine

I removed the sump to get to oil pump, split it apart, all fine. hex drive, all fine. Upon closer inspection turns out it was the base of the dizzy shaft that was the root cause. It had stripped creating a lack of drive to the hex bit, simulating a failed oil pump. Aftermarket distributor made from alloy, which i used to replace old dizzy and go electronic a little while ago. Shame because it was brand new from england and i was just trying to help the old girl out. Ah well, guess I can take the opportunity to freshen up the head (bearings seals etc) and replace various gaskets while shes apart. Hopefully the camshaft is deemed serviceable :-? :-? ...

oh. And i guess she was dry on 2 and 3 because of the heat created by the centre bearing being munched by lack of lubricant..
