What Brake Setup??

I am just starting to look into the front brakes for my Mk1 Escort tarmac rally car.

I am using RS stub axles and 15" rims (exact type to be determined but possibly panasports budget permitting). I do not have the hubs yet so recommendations where from (Eurospeed?) and type?

I think I want to use either AP Racing, Alcon or Brembo calipers (as opposed to something off a road car) with whatever disks and pads. I have searched the net for off the shelf packages within Australia but it appears none exist (or I would have to contact the distributor direct).

What combinations of calipers, pads and disks do you people use and recommend? Where are good places to buy? Here, overseas, eBay etc? I am happy to buy calipers from the above suppliers then disks separate if need be.

The budget is healthy but not extreme.

Might this be suitable? Have no experience or opinion on them, just found the kit on the net.

I have heard bad things about Hi Spec calipers. If you want the really good brakes I would go for AP or Alcon. Demon Tweeks do a couple off Alcon kits, not cheap but excellent. I use AP calipers that bolt straight on to Escort struts and AP vented discs with alloy bells and Ferodo DS3000 pads and they are brilliant

I got the AP calipers from Gartrac part no. GAR6141 or AP part no. CP 3228 they open back " forest calipers " not the more expensive closed back historic ones. Bells from Gartrac but it was cheaper to get the discs (260 mm) and pads from Demon Tweeks. I use 13 in wheels but as you have 15 in wheels you may want to go for the 304 mm Alcon kit from Demon Tweeks

These use brackets between the caliper and strut which could be a problem in licensing the car

R.A.C.E in the UK do AP kits for both 13in and 15 in wheels which are cheaper than the Alcon kits but I have not bought anything from them as you have to phone or fax them, no website but they have a very good reputation

I still need to learn the differences between AP forest and tarmac and historic calipers.

The car will not be road registered (way too strict over here!!!) so mounting brackets will not be an issue at all.

Was just thinking....what is the difference between the AP/Alcon/Brembo disks and other disks? In Australia we have a company called DBA who make disks for manufacturers and the aftermarket. These would no doubt be much cheaper but I am not sure if they are different in the type of metal etc

Not sur if I am correct in my thinking but I think the caliper is by far the most important part of a race brake setup and the disk is secondary??

AP calipers,
RACE Adaptor brackets.
310mm willwood disks and
5mm offset bells
15 inch Revolution wheels
DS3000 pads

Just fits inside wheels
Should be much better than the Volvos interms of weight and pad swept area

Thanks....its times like these that I wished RACE had a website!!!!! I assume those mounting brackets are specific to that caliper/rotor size?

I am seriously thinking about the GRP4 Fabrication 15" AP kit....I like having everything supplied so that I dont need to source bits from all over the place....me thinks I a little lazy?

Thanks Danny. The AP kit uses the Pro 5000+ series calipers so not sure if you class those as road based or competition based but would be about $2300 delivered. Maybe I will add this to the list of things I have to ring you about in the next day or so...... As with all things, my budget is as big as it NEEDS to be but does have limits
