Thanks Roger, I see that the crank scrapers Kevin Johnson now does for the Pinto uses the sump fixings, I assume you must use 2 gaskets not sure if that would cause any issues with the front and rear seals. Anybody used these scrapers? Those High Energy Sumps certainly look the goods but a tad to espensive for my budget, the springs on the trap doors would be reasonably soft??? or would the door just close under the weight of the oil???

Thanks Neville, No Baffle/Tray over the top? What is the purpose of the notch on the left side?

John, in the last photo the cover is there, its just sitting up the front of the sump. It is bolted down (three bolts) on top of the steel trapdoor piece. The notches are for clearance of the cover on that side.

No worries Neville, I see what you are doing now, looks good, I think I might copy your design and use the "johnson" crankscraper, that should give a good result I hope.

Neville, been studying the photo's and been wondering why the trapdoor is on the right side. This will probably sound like a silly question, please excuse my ignorance I'm only a novice at this, but my logic would tend towards the other side. With the majority of our circuits being clockwise, with the exception of Eastern Creek, I would have thought the oil would surge to the left more than the right. I am assuming that the trapdoor is to prevent the oil leaving the pan during high corner loads while still allowing oil to return to pan when level. Am I right in this theory or am I missing something fundamental.

John,

As this is for an RS alloy sump. it only has a wing or ear on the drivers side (starter motor sits on the other) so you only need to control the oil flow on that one side. The swinging gate keeps oil in the centre bowl on left hand corners.

I like you're logic but it's basically just a design issue to do with the sump itself.

I'm going to be using the Cortina Tin sump, what are your thoughts on a trapdoor both sides and at the front where yours has the 3 holes. I would need to move them inboard and to the rear a little, hopefully there would be enough space. With the baffle, as used in the escort sump, and the crankscraper, which Roger posted link to, in theory this would be a reasonable combination to control oil surge and windage. What are your thoughts, have you seen this done in this way before with success or am I trying to invent a wheel with a already flat tyre.

theory behind having trapdoors diagonal

you brake hard two doors close, two open
you turn two doors close two open
you accelerate two doors close two open
all bases covered easier for oil to get in to pick up
