Nose is about 50mm higher than rear as discussed. Haven't gone over yet. have to clear more stuff to flip it over safely. Dont want to scratch the roof on the walls.
more parts on their way including new seat rail boxes. have started the cut-it-out process, having unpicked the two wings of the tunnel stiffener to free up the floor space for cutting and welding soon. Post Christmas holiday period cant come soon enough. spare time and cash to spend!
keep the momentum (and pics) going mate. Threads like this instill an unexplainable urge to take my car apart, even though it makes no sense to... dangerous stuff.
FFS, Christmas holidays almost over and barely anything to report. How do I get myself so involved in others business!.
Bigger holes cut. I like to call them exploratory but the reality is they are cutting my previous amateur mess out. Hope my new found patience and belief I have skill through Knowledge pays off. 6 months on its side to return to the same point I was a month ago would be um disappointing.
All I can say is who did this!
But nice new shapely bits
Still after an Auto tunnel. Or I might re-repair this one or go aftermarket I have also decided to go all out on this one. Stuff IP rules as to be honest, with a 'Grand design' on the new house coming up, new business etc I doubt Ill ever spend the cash on an IP season with all their FIA lifed components, entry fees and damage etc. Private practices, 6 hours, hillclimbs, sprints is enough for my proposed budget. And If my 'skilz are as mad' as I hope I enjoy the idea of the restoration as much as the driving. JP
Update seems pitiful compared to Scotts escoarer but hey I also have two nice new ceiling fans installed, a new driveway, assembled the Christmas gift BBQ, welded in a drivers footrest to the subazuki and installed new speakers and amp in the ute! Slowly unpicking th emess. Spent 2.5 hours grinding of seam welds to help undo a previos repair
After grinding away old welding I had to panel beat the front firewall 'tub' after it warped, ha sbetter shape than ever before. And lots of measuring before cutting. Im going to try and save this tunnel. Well the top anyway.
Painful for sure ( grinding for 2 hours left blisters on the skin) new welders sleeves today fixed that nicely and I feel so 'sexy' in them like an upside down cowboy! but so much easier with the rotisserie. More slow cutting and exploring. Just ordered new inner sills to clean them up as well and make it look right. The inside of the original sills are rust free which is a relief. will treat them again before the new inner goes on. Once I get my eye in on one side Ill repeat on the other, at this stage the way things are going there wont be any grinding, just cut it all out and reapply good correct shaped metal.. Practiced metal shaping today as well, managed a nice even smooth hammer and dolly formed 90 degree curve in flat sheet, will try a more complex shape next time as the footwells have some interesting curves. From this
steel going back in. new front inner sill. decided to cut the roll cage foot out to get the the inner sill. at some point in the past it has been hit and was a bit crumpled. hammering, dollying and straightening. also plugged the chassis rail back together after old spot welds were removed. Also finally after 20 years of owning the car fixed the rust in the door aperture seam new bit welded in.
Got fancy with the new metal bender, lots of measuring and checking and hey presto. good fit, Im happy with it too which is important.
nice fit
will trim up the rear floor and butt weld here I think,. 5 hours of work. 1 x 150mm long 90 degree angle made and welded in, this 650x190 floor section and about 450mm of inner sill welded in. Oh and about 1kg of weld smoothed out!
anytime, Up to 450 wide and about 1.2mm thick I reckon! But I have to say all made so much easier with the rotisserie. many thanks New steel in should be quicker than old steel out and passenger side should be quicker again.
heatwave over 7 more hours gone, but something positive happened!. Metal was welded in, not all of it but some the seat mount box is tech-screwed in for fitting. Also ran out of gas in the mig! the floor panel needed the sill edge reshaped so was cut to allow to rebend was miles out.
Now the complex bulkhead and wheel well. I do hope its easier and quicker on the other side! Bough myself a nice new air tool, an edge flanger or joggler. looking forward to using it somewhere probably along the remaining edge of the trans tunnel to allow the new flat piece to be smoothed in.
I havent used my tool yet! but I have been using 5mm drill to make the 'spot weld' holes and by the time I get a pool of weld in there with good penetration it makes for a good size spot. plus mine are only 30mm apart and I will be seam welding below after. I have found that some of the larger holes left over after removing old spot welds, circa 8 mm need too much weld to fill in one go that causes it to come close to burning through. the second weld just builds and needs too much grinding.
Slowly slowly. Looking for some front wheel wells as I cant double curve steel sheet. Beyond my meager skills that bit of cardboard need to bend in both directions to fit right.
Anyone have some or an old bulkhead or an alternate solution? Cheers
Looking good so far, some food for thought relating to your wheel wells...
I know it's alot more work but you can pick up some pretty cheap english wheels, and it looks like your developing a pretty good little setup there. You might suprise yourself what you can achieve with a few solid days of practice and youtube. No experience personally with multi radius/turnback forms, but looks like it could be one of those things that despite the effort ends up taking just as long only this way is far more satisfying and your more skilled and equiped in the future as well. That's how I like to get stuff done anyway, if you have the space and time and the equipment doesn't cost too much, do it yourself. Only way to be truly happy with the result and if your not, at least you don't have to accept it was someone elses fault.
