Nutmeg MK2

Postby marty » Sun Jul 08, 2012 6:25 pm

Oops I did it again.

The latest addition to my growing stable.

Its a 79 1600 in very good nic.
It has had a new paint job recently and mechanically seems great.
It also comes with more spare parts than I can poke a stick at. And boxes of Classic Ford magazines, manuals, books and DVD's
It belonged to a very nice guy called Alan who passed away recently who took very good care of it, some of you may have met him.

Here are a few pics.

Last one.

One question, it gets a vibration that I feel through the steering wheel which generates a loud hum that stops when the steering wheel is turned right or brake pressure applied.
Any ideas?

That's nice............

Very nice 2 dr.

Have you had a feel of the wheel bearings, that may contribute to what your feeling through the wheel. Possibly even too tightly pre-loaded or bearings may be badly pitted?

Could be the discs are warped, bearings worn, wheels need a balance.

Great looking car!

Alan Ball. Didn't know him personally, but the earlier HSCCQ guys knew him quite well. Like the others mentioned, could be bearings, possibly lower ball joint contributing.

It's hard to keep a secret but didn't want to say anything till it was in my hands.

Yes it was Alan Ball, a lovely bloke with a love of Escorts (30 in total) gone too soon.

I'll strip the front end down on the weekend and check it all and hopefully find something.

I should mention that the hum does happen at any speed and a high pitch.

It can happen on the freeway at 100kph or walking speed turning left, same frequency.

The wheels do need a balance, bit of a woble at about 105kph.

isnt NUTMEG just another name for "rust colour" ?
look on the positive side . it is a briliant colour for disguising rust !!
if you look up the paint codes ?
you should find it under "FENCE STAIN" OR "timber decking"
LOL
ps
it does look like a nice buy
well done marty

Good news, I pulled out the disk pads, cleaned up calipers, pins and shims and the hum has gone.
