Couple of other thing to look at

Are internal bores of the bearings the correct dia to give clearance

Check the top faces of the head (were rocker cover sits) to see if they are flat, the block face of the head may be flat because its been machined but the head may still be a little bent which will stop the cam slipping in

Back to basics...................

The 3 bearings are different sizes.

The cam goes in from rear.

The front and rear bearings only go one way.
