Well, block and head are up for the dummy build now. Of all times to have to go away on a remote field contract, this is going to be a little inconvenient. I will have satphone contact @ $2/min to the outside world so not totally out of touch. I will miss the daily check in with the RS forum though.

Have a couple of challenges facing me now. The piston crowns are proud of the deck by .035". Also the ridge between the valve pockets fouls on the valve faces so even with 2 head gaskets on the deck the head wouldn't seat down. I accepted that the valve reliefs would have to be machined to suit the bigger inlet valves so that wasn't unexpected and is still doable but the compression height is still going to be wrong. My calculations for the piston height must have been out by a little somewhere, or my measurements more likely.
So now its back to sourcing some pistons to suit. Looks like CP here I come

Sent this to Quantum Racing in Brisbane pre-Xmas. Have to wait now till late Feb for the new CP pistons to come back from the US. Lots of fun making the mould with 2 pack body filler.

Well it's now mid-February and inquiries to Quantum and CP pistons say my job is still in engineering and they are running behind schedule.
In the meantime I have been focusing on getting something happening for a gearbox and have bought a straight cut HD Quaife gear set from the US. My alloy case has arrived from the UK but was made to suit the Clubman layshaft so the supplier is machining another for me.
Looks like my cunning plan of saving money on the new gearbox is falling apart. The differences between the HD set and Clubman will probably mean some of the components from the donor gearbox won't be compatible and I will have to source new items. I'm already up for a new layshaft spindle and sleeve which will have to come from Quaife UK at great expense no doubt. Bearings, gaskets, seals etc are not a real issue but synchro hubs and steel baulk rings are rather pricey......

Been dealing with Quaife directly and they have been more than helpful. Emailed all the drawings with exploded views and part numbers. Ordered about a 100 quid worth of parts so far, all the fiddly bits like spacers and needle bearings etc. Just need to get the HD case over here and i'm in business. Gearset is out of customs and on it's way to Adelaide and as a bonus I didn't have to pay any import duty

Fitted up my carbs to the manifold. I'd like an opinion as to whether I should remove this material out of the manifold. I know the head side of the manifold is matched to the inlet ports on the head. The Dellortos are a close fit on the studs so when I loosened of the nuts there was no real improvement to be had there.
Get down in there with a marker pen and highlight the material to be removed, then take them off the manifold and have a look. Good excuse to get some quality cutting tools for the die grinder.

Well, after many PM's and phone calls, it looks like these pistons aren't going to make the grade either. On paper the valve reliefs are barely adequate for a cold engine, much less hot and running 8500RPM. And if i want to try any different phasing on the exhaust then forget it. All the bits have gone to Milton's here in Adelaide to do a dummy build so it's all up in the air till Tuesday or so. Plus side is if the valve pockets are'nt deep enough(which they won't) Quantum said I can return them.

The price was ok for what I thought i was going to get....ie a set of forged pistons with 11.1 compression and suitable valve reliefs for the lift I'm going to run. Gave them all the info they asked for and they still may have messed it up.
Not to mention the 4 months I've been waiting for them

I only use CP and have never waited longer than 8 weeks for custom order sets from order to sitting on the bench at work.
Did you specify valve pocket depth?
They have the 3D modeling software you just need to tell them the valve pocket depth and volume.
Example In. .300" min for 1.480" diameter Ex. .260" min for 1.220" with the intruder to have total volume of + 8cc including area to top ring land. They then work out the shape and ring location from there.
Steve, I've been there done that, quit while your this far in and put a more manageable engine in your car. YB's are over rated and too expensive to keep going. Especially with the revs you will be using to make it competitive. Sold mine and crossed over to a cost effective jap made version. Good luck David
