The tolerances from the factory were huge!!!! They apparently used to adjust the door hinges by putting a socket head in the door as a leverage point....
First was the getting rid of the rest of the underseal: (That's three dustpan loads)
This is the rust I spotted when I cut out the rear arches (this is the inside of the C-pillar):
This is my DIY sandblast unit:
10 minutes later (and a lot of mess):
Next was the jacking points. Both had been bent seriously out of shape and at some stage filled with bog. The main problem for me was this stoped the bubble arches from fitting the body:
A DIY slidehammer:
A bit of heat and 30 minutes of bashing and it's back into shape:
The passenger side wasn't as bad but after a tap with the hammer a big lump of bog fell out revealing: (I wish people would treat rust prior to filling)
Anyhow thats all fixed now. As of Saturday night it looked like:
Then Sunday was the "Last Blast" Superkhana - So I took the white one out to remind myself why i'm doing this:
I really really need to get a decent LSD, and a better engine, and better gear ratios, and better seats, and...
Well done Paul, you're work ethic and persistance makes me want to get at one of mine ......I need to finish of a rotisserie as it's the only way to get the access right so as to stop breaking ya neck
More rust - this is the rear of the roof once the headlining was removed:
I've chopped the worst of it out and given it a quick blast - its still going to be tricky to fix:
The normal door pillar rust:
I've now got the outer arches welded back in so decided it was time to seal it all up. I gave the bottom another wire brushing, followed by scotch bright and rust converter, then prep sol, then a heavy coat of etch primer:
The inside got a similar treatment except I ended up sandblasting most of the floors:
It's always amazing how good they look once you get a single color back on them.
My first event for 2011 is a twilight Rally Sprint this coming Thursday, so I decided to give the white car some much needed lovin'
It's my first CAMS event with this car, and it needed safety triangles and a 2ltr catch tank fitting to be compliant.
1) Alimax Grp4 Radiator
2) Thermo Fan - unfortunately I have had to set this up to push. I have managed to hide the fan motor behind the body work between the wholes to minimise the airflow loss.
3) Newlyy fabricated 2ltr catch tank tucked up under the front guard
A quick squirt round the block and the car runs a nice consistent 82 degrees. Idling back home in the shed it got upto 87 and then the fan kicked in and it came back to 82... It's 38 degrees in the shed so I was pretty happy with that!
I woke up this morning and discovered fuel all over the trailor / drive. With the angle of the car on the trailor and the sloping drive it appears that the weber floats/needle valves bypassed filling the crankcase with 20+ liters of boosted 98RON.
So a 6:30 AM strip of the carbies, reset of float levels and a oil change (and woken neighbours), and off we went and fortunately arrived in time for second group hillclimb.
Despite the Wednesday dyno recording peek power at 6200rpm the car struggled to reach 6000rpm up the hill. Then on run 3 the starter motor solinoid came loose, and on run 4 the fan fuse blew taking out the fuel pump too.
So I stuck it on the trailor and cruised home and in trying to unload discovered the starter refused to play at all - and guess what? the spare standard starter is all seized too....
That is very disappointing Paul. We were looking forward to hearing all about your exploits. My nephew, who lives in Perth sent me this MMS yesterday....one of you rivals I presume?

"If we are still looking out the SIDE window it's under control" - Roger Clark
It has always amazed me that the VSCC of WA will log book a MK 1 RS2000 as Nc when Nc is for Touring Cars 1965 - 1972 and the RS2000 wasn't produced until 1973.
i am very suprise dit was log booked as Group NC as well. I'm restoring a a 1300 Nc car. Would have been a lot easier to just stick a 2 litre in it! Bit late now, have the pistons from the U.S and the Crankwork done!
Bugger!
Very nice cars though. Enjoying the build very much
