got a bit of an update i pulled the rear subframes out of both cars took all the good bits and reinstalled the old one back in the red car. i need to put the rear suspenion bushes in, paint the subframes and control arms, install brakes and the bronze car will be rolling again. i have sold a few things off the red car so i went and bought some anti-go items. i was looking into getting a willwood big brake kit for the front but after the research and talking to a few people (thanks gary and danny) i decided against it. that left me with 2 options. one to spend $4k+ on a really good brake set-up like ap racing or alcon or two, use the current calipers and replace rotors and pads. i decided on option 2 as i just want to get this car racing agian. for rotors i got ahold of some dba 4000 series slotted rotors with kanga paw venting (custom made for e30s). these have a temp paint on the side, green turns to white at 450c, orange turns to red at 550c and red turns to white at 650c. thought this would be interesting to see which tracks get the brakes hot. for pads i ordered some hawk hp+ track pads for the front and hawk hps for the rear. also ordered some braided lines as well. as for the master cylinder i did some research and found the if i increase the internal diameter (currently 23mm) of the cylinder by 2mm i could get a 20% stiffer pedal. then i discoved that bmw make a 25mm master cylinder for there bigger cars. so i am looking into grabbing on of them. so with all that my brake set-up should be pretty much bullet proof so next on the to-do list is get the bronze car rolling, get the rust removed and guards modified. after that i will be getting my roll cage done (around the end of july). another thing on the to-do list is give the diff a birthday as the clutch packs have loosened up a bit.... dont know why as i never drove it hard also looking into getting taller diff gears as with the current 4.11s and the cr gearbox i will top out at 205kph at 8000rpm in 5th. im thinking 3.91s should be another as that gets me to 235ish. should be enough at lakeside. on another scary note when i pulled the engine out of the red car i found that the bottom engine mount stud had cracked the subframe and worn a massive hole in it. so basically the engine wasnt being held in on the right side anyway on with the pics
Don't know if you've considered this already but I agree the Willwood rotors and calipers aren't that great but the floor mounted pedal box is a good piece of kit for an E30. When I had my BMW 2002 I wanted to use one but the historic rules wouldn't allow it.
Alot of the guys in the UK have changed to a e36/e34 five stud setup on the hubs ala E30 M3 which gives you the braking setup choice of the E46 330 standard setup. This in an E30 would be more than enough for you!!
That's not necessarily the case Gary. The rules allow floor mounted pedals and replacement pedal boxes/movement of pedals for those fitted with floor mounted boxes. Obviously you can't change hung pedals to floor mount type.
Ok so I have had a few days off and have had a massive cleanout of the garage and gotten stuck in to a few things. First of all a cleaned up the coilovers and installed new longer 'heavy duty' wheel studs. I also got my front calipers back with new pistons and seals. I put the freshly painted subframe in with the new engine mounts. This is when I started having trouble. When I went to put the new control arms in, I snapped a bolt and cracked the shits! So as far as chassis things go thats as far as I have got, although a recent trip to noosa has made me wish I had a race car again So I decided to get rid of all the unwanted stuff to the dump (about 150kgs). Then I went out and bought a engine stand new I can put my beautiful M3 motor on. After fighting for 30 minutes getting the motor on the stand I pulled the oil pan and sump of to find something amazing..... a blue crankshaft. After a quick call to my friends at RX Automotive they told me that I had a full BMW motorsport 2.5L crank not just the standard 2.5L evo crank that I thought I had. The main difference I can find is this one is lighter and nitride treated (hence the blue colour). On quick inspection everything in the bottom end looks very good, I can't see any cracks and the pistons look brand new. So I am a very happy lad!
So I have a little progress report. I dropped the engine of at RX Automotive ready for them to strip and rebuild it. That night I got home and ordered all the parts... CP pistons, ARP studs, motorsport bearings, thinner head gasket and full engine gasket it. Also rang up and booked in my roll cage to get done. I have taking holidays from work for the weekend of Noosa hillclimb so thats the event I am aiming for. Other little bits and pieces have been started, like my custom design fuel tank I will try and update as soon as new and exciting things happen. Cheers Glenn
Haven't been on here in a while and alot has happened! So I have a super quick update of pics! Basically got a new black E30, rebuilt the M3 motor, painted engine bay blue and bought a Motec :) here are alot of pics! New car as we got her Smashed front. Wheel test fit Motor built New front Moroccan Blue! Engine bay painted Motor in Interior Gearshifter Airbox on Oil cooler on Motec M84 As she sat yesterday Car is now off getting the exhaust done! Phew!
Suspension Coilovers 8kg front, 10kg rear M3 offset front control arm bushes E36 steering rack Rear camber and toe adjustment Fresh rear trailer arm bushes and subframe mounts
Brakes DBA front and rear rotors Hawk pads Braided lines Bigger master cylinder
Very nice mate....that would go very well between the trees!
Doesn't the e36 rack conversion make such a difference, is it an M3 or z3 version? The standard racks are such a crap ratio something like 4.5 turns lock to lock! One of THE best modifications to carry out on a car is a quick rack, inspires confidence!
