Hi Guys well the new project is in the garage and I have started to remove what ever is left on the shell mainly wiring, front struts and cross member, dash and steering wheel. once I get the doors off I will send the shell off for soda blasting and priming then I can start to rebuild it. I am finding a small amount of rust but to be honest I have more rot in my joints than this. here is a couple of pics and more on the blog Peter
I had a long week at work last week which also included a lot of sitting doing nothing. So in the down times I started to think about the Black shell and what to do with it. I decided to get it on wheels so that it could go to my panelbeater to get some work done. the work will be rear turrets, gussets, strengthening and a 2 link for the rear end. Now this is all work I would probably try to do myself however This car will end up on the road and to get a car reregistered in New Zealand any Structural welding has to be done by a certified welder which I am not. So to save time and hassle in dealing with the powers that be I will get the work done by them. So I now have a rolling shell once the structural stuff has been done I will strip it again and get it acid dipped then primed and then the build will begin. while this is happening I will also be building a couple of new spits for both shells At this stage I am still designing them but one will be able to be raised up so that it will clear some garage space and enable me to work on both cars with out too much effort. I will keep you informed as to what happens as I go Peter
I finally have started to make progress on the black shell. This includes purchasing new bubble arches (glass not steel I couldnt warrant spending over a grand on steel ones) giving it its first wash in years and started to clean off the paint in the boot to see what sort of condition it was in. The latest is on the blog including pics I will put more on here but it is slow loading them onto photobucket and there is quite a lot to load (nearly 200) Peter
Good to see you have a good shell now after all the effort that went into fixing one area in the other shell then only to find even more rust in another area. Thanks for posting pics and updated info.
Thanks Darren Don't worry the old shell is not finished yet. I had a call on Friday last week from a guy who has a front cut in his shed so if it is ok It will end up on the on the white one. I will go and look at it when I can hopefully this weekend as I am in Noosa on holiday at the end of next week.
I removed the guards off the black car today so that I can access some small rust spots. I have also purchased the new rear strut towers and a panel for the dash to fit the 6 dial gauges that was going into the other car. more on the blog http://mk1escortrebuild.blogspot.com/ Peter
I cut the guards to take the arches and then started to clean up the inner drip rails. Once I started to do this I found a bit more rust hiding under some silicon filler so I will need to repair this before proceeding with the rails an guards. Oh the rust was at the top of the Right A pillar. So this area is fimiliar to at least. I will post pics on the blog as soon as I can Peter
At the weekend I had some time free to work on the black car. I stripped the L/H guard down to bare steel welded up the drill and rust holes in both guards as well as the inner guards and bulkheads and A pillars. Once I have finished stripping both guards I will prime with Hammerite before fitting the arches. So I am at least making some progress this one seems to be taking ages to do but it is probably because less needs to be done and I am without a rotisserie at the moment so I am not hurrying it too much. Peter
I have fitted the L/H arch and started to clean up the R/H guard. This is going to cause more than a little hard work and take a bit of patience as it has had a good hit at some stage and is quite bent. I will persevere as long as I can but I do have a spare if I cant get this sorted. how I did the arch is on the blog Peter
Not a lot more will be done on the old girls till the new year now However I have picked up a alloy centre panel and a pair of strut top plates this week. This will probably be my last post this year as i am away with work for a few days and then I am on my xmas holidays. So I would take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy xmas and a safe but enjoyable new year. Peter
Hi All I am back from holidays but off to the states for work tomorrow. I have had 2 weeks at home but most of the time was catching up around the house (lawns gardens etc) I did get 1 day in the garage and all I could do was tidy up the tool box and cut the front off the white shell to make it easier to get to the work bench. I returned hoping to find that Santa had left me something nice in the garage but the bugger missed me completely. Hope he was nice to all of you guys and girls Peter
Got a bit of work done this weekend the R/H guard is not stripped back to bare steel and the inside is Hammerited. I will do the outside of the guard this week then will fit the Arch so I am back into it. Auckland had its annual Intermarque Concors' and classic car show yesterday but I was required to work so I missed it completely (bugger it) but the overtime was needed. If you want to see some photos go to http://www.concours.org.nz/ they will post pics at some stage. Peter
Hi Guys I have done a How to guide on how I fitted my Bubblearches to the front guards on my project to view it go to http://mk1escortrebuild.blogspot.co.nz/ ... rches.html Hope some of you can find use for this Peter Oh I will do one for the rears when I get on to it
Hi All I haven't been very active recently but I am making small steps on the Black escort. At the moment funds are a bit tight as we are currently putting in a new bathroom at home and I have had to spend some big dollars on a couple of investment properties that we own so that has sucked up most of the budget for the builds. I now have a plan for the build for the rest of project it will go something like this Once the rotisserie is done I will be sending her off to the panel beaters for all the structural work to be done. Then it will go and get the roll cage built then off to get sodablasted then back to the panelbeaters for a full primer paint job. then it will come home and it will be built up fully to running and driving stage then off to compliance ( if i need to have anything done at this stage I dont want to risk damaging the paint) then stripped down and off to the Painters then fully built start it up and have a blast. Sounds easy but I am looking at probably 2 - 3 years to get her finished. Then I will look at my Alfa and give her a good tidy up then I will start on the white car. it looks like I will be very usy and broke for the next Decade. That all for now Peter
Happy New Year all. Where the hell did 2012 go it wasn't a great year for progress on the projects but the next 12 months are looking better already. First up is to buy a new welder then I can start work on the cars. Also this year we are looking at doing some renovations to the house or more specifically the cave. This will include more than doubling the size so that I can get all the cars inside, the current garage will become the exclusive domain of the projects. What am I waiting for well our architect will need to design it along with some other work so it will be 6 months till we can start but at least work can proceed on the cars. I will keep putting updates on here and the blog as usual. All the best for a great year Peter
