hey guys, are the steering rack housings on a twin cam(long stem) and the standard mk1 interchangable? also are the ratios different?my rack is bent from a crash and i havent had a chance to look at both type of racks side by side yet. im sure some of you will have the answer. cheers.
thanks paul, do you happen to know the ratios? i had a look in the ford escort factory manual today,it says that ford used two different companies to supply the racks,Cam Gears and Burman.Cam Gears use a 25 tooth rack and a 5 tooth pinion and Burman have a 23 tooth rack and a 6 tooth pinion .it doesnt specify that the twin cam was fitted with a different ratio though.i took mine apart and it has 25 rack teeth and 5 pinion teeth so i guess its a Cam Gears item.
Cam Gear bolts in from the top (same as all Mk2's I think) and Burman bolts in from the bottom. The long steel shaft can be straightened if need be. This might help........

how do you shim the t/c rack ? to get the rack & pinion to mesh nicely ? ps i do like the grease nipple in the other rack i have often thought about plumbing the gearbox breather in to the rack in this spot just to keep it lubed ?? & gives some where for the g/box breather to vent . any thoughts anybody ??
