RS sort shifter

Postby shepv8 » Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:10 pm

Hi all,
there are a few threads on this issue but none really answer my question, so......
The shifter on my RS Mk2 is broken. Some reports claim that the shifter is the same as a regular MK1-MK2 escort except for a spacer bolted under it. Others say the gearstick itself is different. Does anyone know for certain what the situation is. If I buy a standard escort shifter ( there are some on ebay for $50-$70) and fit it with this spacer plate will it be the same short shift action. Does anybody know if the shifters on burtons website are a good replacement, as these claim to be "short throw" already. If the burton shifters are already short throw does this then mean you do away with spacer plate on my RS?
Cheers

Short throw simply changes the pivot point for the shifter. A threaded spacer is required to lift the pivot point higher on the gearbox, a spacer is also required on the gear lever to lift the pivot bush by the same amount. This mod can be done to a standard shifter.

The mod to a standard shifter to make it a short throw involves making a spacer to clip onto the shaft that is the same length as the spacer that screws into the gearbox. The exact length I don't know at the moment. Remove the circlip, slip the rubber up the shaft and insert the spacer. Screw the spacer onto the gearbox extension then screw in the modded lever.

Or spend $$ on a quaife one
