mkII 4spd reverse light problems

Hi everyone,

problem;

reverse lights are on when the gearleaver is not in reverse

I thought the problem would be the reverse light switch in the gearbox, but after pulling it out it seems to work fine. Can someone confirm that the contacts are supposed to be normally closed? (short). i.e when the push contact is closed the circuit goes open.

If the switch is ok, it looks like the problem is within the gearbox. does anyone have a breakdown diagram of how the reversing light mechanism works?
