Sun roof patch

Has any one made or got photos of a patch for a sunroof?

i know i could get a cut a roof of another car or weld in a patch but i can see that going wrong pretty quick.

An aluminium patch could work but it may look very flat

I was thinking a carbon fiber one would look good or even fiberglass but not sure if you can mold it on top of another roof to get the right curve???

Do yourself a favour and reskin the whole roof

Problem is finding a shell good enought and bad enough to cut the roof off it

I'm pretty sure the 2 & 4 door roofs were the same so don't limit your search to one type.

Mk2's definately same roof skin on 2 and 4 door not sure about the MK1 though.

even easier to put the sunroof back in
i know its not ideal
but unless its a realy special car ??
its nearly easier to get another hole free shell

Definitely a lot of work which can easily go very wrong and ruin the entire turret.

Try using a flat sheet of mild steel (I think the turret of the MK2 is 0.6mm or 0.5mm sheet).
Using a patch cut from a Mk2 is a waste of time simply because the thin sheet will distort enough that by the time you have fully welded it, it will be very distorted (as well as the roof itself). The curved turret roof shape can only be beaten back in.

I did exactly this four years ago on a Mk2 RS2000 and took approx 80 hours first attempt (which failed), then approx 130 hours second attempt. The result was perfect and body filler free.

You will defintiely need a small air hammer and the car stripped to bare shell inverted on a spit.
I would not recommend doing it if you are not willing to put in the time and effort. Not a job for most people, including most panel beaters.

Best to consider replacing the turret skin itself which should take about 16 hours and can be done with the car in upright position.

Peter i remember reading about the issues you had and was not going to try to attempt it . i was thinking of cutting it thru the A,B & C pillars and matching it up with the roof Bevan ( Group 5) has offered me.. I have seen it done before and i have some one that is will to attempt it but i would like to know it there are any tips just so i know it’s going to be done right. Plus i am thinking that i should put a cage in while the roof if off

Ahhhh the early 80s. Pop-up sun-rooves were so popular back then. Don't you just hate that they went through that fad now?
