Hey guys, it's been a while since my last visit (I've been off playing with my TX3 Laser), but I have begun the long, slow process of giving my X Pack Mk2 a tidy up for some track work.

I am considering building/buying a trailer, preferably a twin axle. I'd like to try and keep the load area as low as possible for a few reasons, but primarily so I can keep the car on the trailer and still get it into the garage, as well as avoid having to buy/build a tilt trailer or use excessively long ramps. I'd also like to keep it as light as possible.

I have seen a few trailers for sale with solid mounted axles. Obviously this would help a great deal with keeping the load area low, but surely this would place a lot of stress on the tyres, as well as other components?

Does anyone have any experiences they could share regarding solid mounted axles on car trailers? Is it a dangerous practice (or even legal?), and what was it like to tow with? Also, in the instance of building your own trailer, what sort of inspections are required (I'm in Vic). Does it need to be 'engineered'?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I remember the trailer needs engineering and registering in VIC.

We have an ultra low trailer which utilises rubber block (tortion) springs. In essance a trailing arm suspended of a tortion tube running perpendicular to the centerline. therefore the tray is about level witht he centerline of the roadwheel. Only problem is the wheel guards are very high making entry and egress very difficult. The trailer is sized for a formula ford and mostly moved a sprite or Mini around which are a bit easier to get in and out of.

couldn't see it mentioned before, but for light cars (escorts & cortinas) the aluminum painters planks are a great ramp. Nice and long for low suspension cars and light to handle.
Oh and please remember to bolt your trailers down or take the wheels etc off it if your not using it for periods of time, ours was stolen from our place and our home insurance wouldn't cover it.
