Speed Restored • View topic - mk1 radiator ideas
Well I need a new radiator. Looking around it seems all good radiators are made large enough to require fitment of the usual lower radiator support cutout. Currently my support panel is unmodified and I have a larger radiator but it is spaced out at the lower mounting holes to clear the panel. I find this a bit untidy, and would like something that fits a little better and therefore allowed room for a thermo fan on the engine side of the radiator, aswell as meaning the hoses aren't such a tight fit.
Ideally I would like to not modify the panel as my car is IP compliant and although I dont particiate in IP I like the idea of trying my hand at it one day and that would not be allowed. So my first question is, Has anyone got any suggestions for radiator fitment that will fit a stock mk1 radiator appeture. Can anyone comment on what they did for their setups? I can't help but feel that without the cutout if I had a custom one made small enough to fit the stock location that I would have a very small radiator indeed (perhaps insufficient).
Secondly, whatever way I go i'm thinking i'll end up with a slightly custom job from either PWR or Race radiators and if i'm getting it custom built I had a thought.
What if I had a small hose fitting added just next to the main hose inlet which would draw coolant straight from the water outlet on the intake side of the head. I understand this outlet normally either heats the inlet manifold or goes to the heater core or wherever but of course when everyone fits a couple of webers and hots up a motor circulation is lost from this port. Perhaps taking it directly to the radiator would make a reasonable difference in head temp. I would imagine it would get good flow from not only the pump pressure but from the effect of being drawn/entrained from the main hose flow???
Anyone have any thoughts on this, perhaps it might lead to uneven head temps?? I'm sure it's all been done before but I couldn't find any reference to a mod done where it was taken straight to the radiator.
I am also just starting out on the quest for an IP compliant Mk 1 radiator. Have been told the Chinese alloy radiators are pretty good quality for $, you'd better have deep pockets for a PWR.
Other options are get a triple core or larger pipe twin core on the standard header tanks.
Water path is from the radiator - water pump - front of block - back of the block - through the head gasket at the rear, back of head - front of head - thermostat - radiator. I can't see any reason for trying to take water out of the block or head anywhere else.
I'm not sure about the deep pockets call about PWR - I had a custom intercooler and oil cooler made for around $700 - considering it required drawing etc and is of high quality I think that's pretty reasonable. May pay to at least enquire - apologies if I'm wrong on this.
Race radiators do an off the shelf mk1 that is IP/NC compliant. My brother runs one in his NC car and has never had a problem with it. They'll also build the radiator to suit the car - I dropped my car off and they fitted the biggest one they could fit in the space - also have not had an issue. Neither car runs a thermo fan.
Sorry should have mentioned it was to suit a pinto also. I have now had a good conversation with both PWR and Race regarding my options and it seems that to fit any radiator with a good capacity without modifying the panel will leave very little room between the engine pulley and radiator, and generally seems it will be a bit of a squash with the hoses etc. would have plenty of room if it where fitted with a Kent. It will work, although I still think i'll come up with a slightly custom design, just not what I was hoping for in terms of ease of fitment and maintenance.
I certainly don't mind spending the money on a good one here, for some reason radiators are just one of those items I would HATE to have fail and be left feeling I cheaped out on it. But yes they are still expensive, and it hurts a little bit.
Might have to give up the idea of having a fan behind the rad and mount something in front.
If anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear them, otherwise i'll keep you posted.
I'm only running a 1600 so there's a bit more room. I've ordered one of those that I linked to above so I'll let you know how that turns out. I've got a small thermo fan (manual switch) mounted to the car (in front of the radiator) so that i can remove the radiator without having to dismantle the fan/wiring. I've been told a fan will push through the radiator better than pull-through, but as long as its properly shrouded i can't see it making much of a difference.
After looking at a few pics around it appears the upper part of my rad panel (effectively the rear lip of the slam panel that almost touches the upper radiator tank) has been slightly cut and bent over to fit the existing radiator. This didn't twig as it looked pretty factory enough. If I were to restore this to original there is no way at all i'll fit almost any decent radiator at all with a pinto without it interfearing with the pump pulley. So i'm left with either modifying the panel or moving the engine further back.
So my next question is, can someone please educate me a little on the mk1 RS2000. I have done a little search but nothing definative came up. Were the engine mounts (the ones that bolt to the block) different to the Kent ones in that they sat the engine further back?? (incidentally I have enough clearance to easily move the engine about 40mm rearward). Modifying the mounts would of course solve all my problems And also it appears from reading the IP rules that I CAN modify the engine mounts ("engine mounts are free" etc etc)...... can anyone confirm this from experience as it relates to engine position?
Also John, you mentioned the RS front panel was different. I had a sneaking suspicion this was the case. Does anyone have any pics of what a genuine RS panel looks like?? I have done a search but can only find pics of modified ones, or is that close enough?. And to that end can someone confirm if replicars are allowed in IP??
Obviously I have given up on having a thermo behind the rad, i'm not othered by this plenty of room in front.
If my memory serves me correctly, the mk1 RS2000s came with an electric fan and there was no cutout made in the front panels to move the radiator forward. From my own experience with a pinto in a mk1, engine was in normal location, thermo fan was the only option.
Sounds about right. The RS radiator support return is shorter, moving the radiator forward.
I don't have a picture of an original. but have seen a couple. There are members on this board who could provide a picture, but may be disinclined, so that they can maintain authnticity of their real ones.
The RS has alloy engine mount brackets, don't think they sat the engine further back. Kent and pinto mounts are differnt in width across the chassis.
Some of us have moved teh engine back, not all of us considered IP rules though.
Picture of my Mk1, IP rules of no interest to me. RS2k like Rad support, engine moved around a bit.
John, You say not all have moved their engines back considering the IP rules. Looking at the rules though i can't see anything that says you can't (mind you it doesn't say you can specifically). It does say you can modify the engine mounts by cutting welding etc and that they are essentially "free" this all being with the intention to "allow fitment of the engine" It doesn't say anyting about engine position or specifically say you can't. It seems odd that it would be an issue though considering how many cars have completely different engines fitted that would all potentially change the centre of gravity slightly, and of course most likely be positioned as rearward as possible by the owner/fitter. And after all "fitment of the engine" is exactly what i'm trying to do here, albeit as a reverese function of trying to fit a radiator of a reasonable size.
Bevan, Thanks heaps for those pics, it's greatly appreciated and a big help. Basically it appears my panel is already almost identical to an RS's so I know what I have to work with. Which appears without moving the engine leaves me with a radiator with a core no bigger than about 36mm thick, without finding something between 36 and 55mm that is (which seem like the two most common sizes).
That seems to leave me with the most likely option being the standard (not safari spec) GRP4 Fabrications radiator which has a 36mm core. Which out of interest to you all works out to be about $470 to my door depending on the day. Much cheaper than the $800 PWR option.
Thanks for all the help guys, you make life much easier.
