Chassis Plates / VIN numbers... ?

Hi,
Where abouts is the chassis or vin number stamped on a mark 1 escort ?
The only permanent identification I can see is on the passenger strut top (ford build number ?)
The car I just bought doesn't have any ID plates, so I may need to do some more investigation to determine the type, year, etc .... too

It should be on the driver's side strut top (circled in red on the attached pic). You may need to dig through some paint to find it, but it should be there.

Also have a chat to your local traffic authority before you go too far. My Mk1 was also missing its ID tags when I bought it, but according to Vic Roads, as long as it had been registered in Victoria at some point in its life, re-registering it would be fine. However, they said it may not be able to be registered in other states.

I second that. Definitely check with authorities regarding what you have to do to ID it for rego. Dad had a mk1 stolen many years ago, got it back intact minus the id plates (plus an added stereo!). Lots of paperwork involved.
