More progress at this end on the vinegar (acetic acid commercial grade)

I very recently bought from a forum member a volante wheel to make up a set of five for our restoration. Shows the virtues of the acid cleaning process.

As received:

The volante was paint stripped with chemical paint stripper, water blasted and then dunked in the acetic acid for two and a half hours. This photo shows the aluminium wheel fully immersed in the acid about 2 inches below the acid level. Note the outline of the wheel is easily seen with the acid bubbles coming to the surface, spokes, stud holes, rim features etc.

After two and a half hours the wheel was removed and thoroughly water blasted and dried off with compressed air.

Next step was to use (Septome brand) phosphoric acid and light rub with steel wool all over. Then water blaster all over again and dried off.

Always good to see the end result of a process.

Some piccies of the Volante aluminium wheels after painting.

From the bare treated aluminium the wheels were painted in 2 pack etch primer then 2 pack undercoat. Allowed to dry for 14 days.

Then painted in 2 pack silver and clear.

The wheels are currently sitting for 14 days so the paint can harden before having near new Goodyear SuperSteel tyres (from late 1979) fitted.

The wheels then will be fitted to our RS2000 in final prep for the RSOC Aust Concourse Parramatta Park on November 22.
