hi guys ive just started restoring my 1979 escort coupe and have opted for the cossie head.. im very willing to listen to everyones opinion on what needs to be done ive bein doing a heap of research but just after a hand... im not building a track car its just gonna be a nice roadie maybe even the odd sprint so not chasing LOADS of power.....
1st: what needs to be done so that i can get my engine running with the head? 2nd: if im chasing some more hp what should i do? was just thinking maybe some hi-comp pistons may be some flowing and bit of other stuff with a set of sidedrafts (open to options)
If your going to build it from scratch do lots of reading around the forums and plan out EVERYTHING before you pull your wallet out and start forking out the dollars. Make no mistake their is no cheap way to get 250HP out of a yb NASP. I had already spent $1500 on rods and pistons before I really knew what I was doing and it's a very steep learning curve!
Get yourself the best pinto block you can find and build a quality bottom end is a good start. if you dont have to bother with a strict 2L capacity you can bore the cylinders out to 92-93 mm. Longer rods are a good idea if your block is full height.
Dont be scared to wait for a good head to come up for sale but be prepared to spend some big dollars on porting to get the best results. If you start with a bog standard head your looking at 4-5000 dollars to convert to NA.
Talk to Danny or Belly, they build race engines but the basic ingredients are the same....they''ll steer you right.

Thanks Steve I've got the choice of 2 atm a bog standard one from England thats off a seirra with 90ooo ks and was smashed in the rear end can come with everything or a bloke in Sydney said he would sell me a turbo ready head for 3500 already xrayed n all that n come back with no cracks.. But if I have to convert it to NA is there need to buy a turbo ready one?
Been thinking about that exact thing. i bought my YB head of Andrew Cavalli in Adelaide and even now he keeps telling me to turbocharge it again. i cant because i'm chasing the 2L record at the local hill climb but for a nice road car a mild turbo build would arguably be cheaper than NA! Driveline to suit a MK2 would need a T5 and a good LSD/axle housing and upgrade the brakes of course. it's all been done before but of course you would need to check with local state laws to avoid headaches with the law. have a look around and talk to the people who've done it already before you make any decisions.
IMHO, the first time I heard my mates turbo cossie in his MK2 I thought it sounded like a sewing machine crossed with a whipper snipper but he was 2 seconds faster up the hill than me out of the box. But when that NA hits 8000rpm and the carbs are singing that song, that does it for me. Watch a few dyno runs on youtube.....your choice.

Ok so in saying that.. Em I better off getting the head from that UK or just buying a head from AUS im happy to turbo but price wise with the cossie head wat would be my best option?
I think you would be better getting a complete engine, they do come up for sale regularly You would have to ask around if it's viable to turbocharge a non 205-200 block.

i have a an engine here stripped for inspection drysumped 50mm throttle bodies it made 218 at the rear wheels we changed our car to a 300+hp duratec so cosworth is just sitting under the bench head has just been reconed with lightweight valves new springs and cams etc
I'm not against YB's. They sound awesome. But they're old castings and whilst I have zero experience with them, the casting becoming soft may be an issue (has anyone had this problem?) and it is older technology with trying to bolt an alloy head to steel block which has been an issue for other motors with similar properties (has anyone had any problem with head gaskets?) Also as Steve indicated the blocks are old and you may need to test several to find a good one.
I think if you were starting a project without a motor it may not be the best choice for dollars/reliability. If you had a motor it would be a different story, or if you wanted a turbo one where the motor would make that sort of hp without an issue then it may be a sound choice.
The zetec/Duratec conversion may be as viable option. The Duratec would be best if your chasing 250, which as Jim indicated is alot for any 2L and will cost $ regardless.
I do appreciate that small Ford enthusiasts have a special spot for the YB and if that's what you want that's fair enough just food for thought.
If you want to use for road and sprints, go turbo. N/A needs to be worked ( big rpm) hard to get the HP you mention.( on the road with a 5.1 diff 4100rpm 110kph and not in the power band of the cams sucks) Also YB N/A you need an open wallet to get the HP you mention. I have sold mine and will be going elsewhere for fun and less frustration. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have kept the YB, but I want too also do Sprints and Drive on the open road. It's all too hard with the YB N/A. Looked at Duratec, need a lot of $ here too. Good luck David
