I know I asked this before but blowed if I can find where.....

What is the best inlet manifold for 48 DCOE on a Pinto? I have been told before that some cannot be ground out to port match.

Is there a tech write up on how to? I would assume that it would be a case of getting the correct (48mm) mild steel (??) tube, welding on some flat plate (5mm?) each end with ports cut out and drilling bolt holes? Is it really that easy??????

I know there must be a science to working out the length of the inlet tubes......

I will search here and google......

The way I do it is.

-buy 2x weber alloy flanges, or have them water cut yourself.

-either cut the flange off the standard manifold, or get a new one water cut from some new material (easily done by scanning an inlet gasket)

-4x alloy tube pieces around the same inside diameter of the standard inlet port, but nice think side walls (most important they are thick!). What ever length suits you engine.

-turn the alloy tube pieces in a lathe to taper from 46-47mm down to inlet port size (this gives you a basic shape)

-tack weld it all together making sure its all in line and the runners run at the correct angle.

-bolt to an old cyl head a finish the welding

-surface grind both flanges when done (carb side and head side)

-drill and tap carb mounting holes

-hand finish the manifold ports with the manifold bolted to the head you are using to make sure it all matches perfectly.

Time consuming, but in my opinion worth every second considering how much time you have to spend porting an off the shelf item.

The engine that I'm currently doing I will be making another manifold for. I will be posting pics on the classic ford forum as it progresses, but it wont be anytime soon.

Cheers

Glenn if you send me a tube type manifold it wont be getting used as they flow badly and require far to much welding

That one looks a lot better than most but I'd want to see how it fits and flows as most tubular manifolds have tubes which are too thin and don't allow for much in the way of changing shape to make them flow as we do a fair bit to cast manifolds to change the shape and flow characteristics as I am yet to find a tubular manifold that flow correctly. The other thing is that most tube manifolds are too long as this one may be but I might buy one and have a look as I have thought of getting a friend with a cnc to turn some bespoke inlet runners as length is quite important as too long has it's own dramas as well as the problem of carby clearence to the inner guard. The other thing to think about is the fact that cylinder no.1 is quite straight and will restrict the space for a distributor which is always a drama with a pinto but you can fiddle with the runners to make them flow the same even with the different angles

Thanks for that Danny. So even a "simple" inlet manifold is not as simple as a tube turned down from 48mm one end and to whatever the inlet on the head is at the other end?

....I have so much to learn........... Embarassed

Roger, you can buy these over here. If you shop around you can pick them up for $60-70 for a pair.

Cheers

Generally find the Redline which is a copy of the old Warneford manifold and the castings seem reasonable for the amount of material we have to take out of them as most of the others fall to bits

My redline is poorly made - the carby mounting studs are very badly misaligned. This puts the two throttle spindles on different planes which means throttles don't open equal amounts - can be fixed by alloy welding & redrilling/tapping stud holes, or rough fix by elongating carby holes with round file!
If possible put a straight edge on studs before buying
