Setting up YBB coolant plumbing in Mk2 Escort
Hope someone can offer some guidance on cooling a YBB turbo in a Mk2 Escort.
Current system description;
No heater core. ECU lives there now.
No modine. Running an adaptor for a remote oil filter and oil cooler
I have an overflow from radiator into a decent alloy catch tank mounted in inner left guard.
Bottom hose from radiator into pump
Top hose from radiator into thermostat housing
Smaller hose from thermostat housing to turbo
Smaller hose from turbo to small pipe on water pump
Rear water outlet on inlet side of head is bunged.
The way I see this, top and bottom hose setup is standard. Pump sucks cooled (by radiator) coolant into block,up through head and back through thermostat into top hose of radiator. The turbo? Looks to me like it's getting hot water from engine out of thermostat and then returning straight to water pump. So it seems like the hot water from turbo is going straight back into engine.
I've read up on a few things and one of the most salient points that struck me is that if the outlet at the rear of the head is not connected water can in fact boil locally around no.4? I'm making 370 HP at the wheels so this engine does make some heat! Also, the factory setups run an expansion tank?
I feel I should connect the outlet to something to allow circulation at the back of the head?
Am I missing something? What's the ideal way to plumb this? Should I have an expansion tank like the factory cars did? Has anyone done this in a Mk2 and could maybe let me have a look at a diagram?
Cheers, Dan

Later as in what I've got or systems that came with later YB cars i.e. Sierra, Escort etc? I've got a diagram I found on passion ford but it is confusing (for me haha!!)
It's just interesting that there are so many observations regarding this hot spot and some guys running an extra temp guage to monitor back of head?
I'm not an expert on cooling systems but I will clarify;
I have deleted the heater matrix (and indeed the whole fan/demister assembly). This is a track car
I have also deleted the Modine as I run an air/oil cooler now.
The question is, what cooling setup is optimal for my situation i.e. no heater no Modine?
Have you retained the modine and heater matrix in your yellow monster? Have you blanked off or connected the water outlet at the back of the head?
If I have to duplicate the factory setup as per a Sierra or EsCos then so be it. I'll move ECU and reinstall heating and Modine but I'm trying to avoid this.
The modine is the oil/water heat exchanger that is sandwiched between the oil filter and the block on factory setups. I deleted this as I am running an external air/oil cooler.
It is turboed. Currently turbo coolant comes from thermostat housing and returns to water pump.
Running NA head but a Sierra water pump with small outlet connected to back of head is what i have. Only do short hill climbs not track but 3-4 times at Mallala have been no over temp probs. Using custom 3 core radiator and engine is mid mounted so no dramas with under bonnet temps
