help needed: surging problem

my rs 2000 has a 2l efi pinto from an 87 granada.
i have noticed of late that while driving the car will surge, or buck and usually die if i don't keep the revs up. it idles erratically and will eventually die if i don't do anything.
after it has died it is almost impossible to start, with me having to depress the accelerator several times and keep the revs happening.
any ideas what i should be targeting? i am convinced it's something to do with the fuel system. the fuel system is the standard one for this engine, only addition is a surge tank in the boot.
any advice hugely appreciated.
