Hot Oil?
I started my car for the first time in a year or two (ran the oil pump first to get pressure up). Due to a handful of knowledgeable people playing around under the bonnet after my last DNF the idle mixture and idle revs are out. I eventually started the car (always been a pig when cold) and let it sit between 1500 and 2000rpm for maybe 3-4 minutes.
I became quite concerned and shut it down as the oil temp by then was showing 100 but the water temp gauge had not moved. (I checked to make sure I had not connected the oil and water temp wires arse about).
The engine fan was not operating but that was due to a wiring fault. The Davies Craig EWP/Fan controller was showing that the fan should have been operating meaning the engine temp was at least 88 degrees.
It is possible that the water temp sender has become faulty as earthing the wire on the sensor sends the gauge all the way to max as I would expect. The wiring and gauge would not appear to be at fault. I am using Evans Waterless Coolant now. At the time of shut down there was a small trace of steam coming from the rad cap (and a small trace from under the inlet manifold!). I suspect this was a small amount of water left in the empty block at the time of refilling with Evans that was evaporating indicating that perhaps the coolant was getting high in temp. However, running a laser temp gun over the engine 5 minutes later indicated that nothing was near 100 degrees. Hmmm
I cannot explain the oil temp gauge showing 100 degrees though after such a short time. I usually don't see 100 until the end of a rally stage. Anybody got any explanations?? Maybe I need to test the oil temp sender using a thermometer and bowl of water to see if it is faulty?
It is possible that the timing was stuffed around with in 2013 after the last DNF which I guess could result in building excess temperature quickly?
I used to see 115 oil temps after a long dirt rally stage. I don't think idling up to engine temp would get near that. laser temp the sump should show what it's at. time to re-do some wiring perhaps??
Pinto water temp senders can get a bit dicky over time. I bought a new one for my rebuilt pinto and the factory gauge works perfect with the needle half way whereas my other pinto (when it was in the same car), the needle sits in between cold and middle of gauge.
I ordered a new water sender and also a new sender for the ewp system. The engine def felt like it got hot quick. My main concern is this super quick heat up time. Just seems strange.
I have made a change to the fan wiring ad i had made a mistake during the recent full re-wire i did.
The oil should never see 100 idling If it was me I would fit a mechanical water temp gauge either a Stack or a VDO and put a standard water pump back on it
Fitted a new water temp sender and that is all good. Started and ran it up to temp and the oil temp was around 80* so dont understand what happened last time it ran.
Due to the carby settings being pretty stuffed around with after the last DNF I have been playing with the idling circuits (45 DCOE). 2 guides I used suggested starting with the idle mixture screws 1-1.25 turns out. Car wouldn't start. I then used the Dave Andrews setting of 2.5 turns out and it started and ran quite smooth. Guess there are differences in the thread pitch on the screws between carbs.
After idling I inspected the spark plugs and 1,3 & 4 looked ok but #2 has deep black and sooty. Must be running rich. Is it common for there to be such big differences between a pair of matched carbies and even such a big difference between the sides of one carby?? They all have 65F9 jets which were installed by the local tuning centre last time it was dyno'd.
The other issue that has me perplexed that I hope somebody can shed some light on is the idle speed. After blipping the throttle pedal a few times the engine often (probably mostly) settles to a 2000rpm idle then after maybe 30-60 seconds suddenly drops back to 1000rpm on its own. I cannot understand this. If I manually blip the throttle at the linkage and allow it to snap back it usually goes straight to 1000rpm. The only thing I can think of is something to do with the progression holes. I am reasonably certain that the closed butterflies are not exposing a progression hole. Pushing the throttle linkage whilst it is at 2000rpm does not reduce the revs so I don't think it is anything to do with weak return springs or twisted shafts etc. My Weber book doesn't mention anything about this type of issue. This isn't a new issue either as I recall it doing it ever since the car was first built.
If one plug is sooty then that could be a bent throttle bar or throttle valve but most likely an ignition fault. Like a damaged lead or plug itself.
Are you sure the idle jets are 65F9 and not 55F9? 65 is too big for a 45DCOE. What cam and what jetting do you have now?
Higher idle speed after blipping the throttle could be a sticking inner throttle cable. Do not lubricate it with oil as that will get burnt due to underbonnet heat and will give you even more problems.
As pushing on the throttle linkage doesn't make a difference at high idle, it sounds like ignition timing advance is not returning to normal idle values.
The idle mixture jets have had 65 hand engraved onto them but I cannot tell if they have been drilled out at all.
I will check the ignition leads, spark plug and look at the timing whilst it is high revving. My ignition leads are clipped together on top of the valve cover. Can that cause issues - should I get one of those lead separator things?
I have tried to use a laser thermometer to check the exhaust manifold temps but being reasonably shiny metal I don't think it is giving me any accuracy.
Rather than start a new thread thought I would ask here.........
Last time I started the car the oil pressure gauge worked correctly. This time it seems to read a consistent 65psi regardless of revs. I am thinking it could be a sticking relief valve in the Weaver oil pump but probably not. Can the sender units fail? (Yes I do STILL have the electric oil pressure gauge not a mechanical) Will probably buy a new one anyway seeing as Classic Adelaide is so close but was interested to know if others have had these fail.
