The Rebuild Begins
Yeah I hear ya mate. I have not cut any corners....the fuel tank, pumps and filler all ended up coming out so that I could ensure the oil system bulkhead fittings were tight and so I could better clean the lines. PITA but I feel more confident now. Hopefully get the engine back Thursday then all bolted back in by the weekend. Have also paint-penned all the bolts.
I changed the 45 DCOEs to 40mm chokes and in doing so noticed that #3 & 4 throttle butterflies were not opening past 85%. Not sure if this occurred during the strip down or whether it was like it during the last event (hope the latter ).
OK, got the rebuilt engine back yesterday and started to bolt everything back on. Hit big trouble. I managed to snap a clutch plate bolt clean off in the flywheel. I was only trying to torque them to 15-20 ft lb but think maybe my torque wrench is not so accurate at low settings? These things always happen when you dont have the time to stuff about!!! Unfortunately there is a bit of blue loctite on the thread which makes things alot worse.
What course of action do you suggest?
It would be nice if I didn't have to remove the flywheel but that might be asking too much. I suppose I could buy the correct size ezy-out (I think these are an 8mm bolt but have no idea what size ezy-out that relates to????) and try that or I could try to drill out the majority of the old bolt and then clean up by running a thread cutting tool through. I don't have a very accurate drill press (in fact its rubbish) and not sure if I could manually drill to such accuracy by eye. Might be best to just take the flywheel off and take it to a machine shop?
You don't have much luck do you... sounds like my car.
Is the flywheel hole blind or is there a portion of the bolt sticking out the back side that you can get some purchase on with some vice grips or similar.
Anyway, I had this happen to me once upon a time. I heated the area with a torch surrounding the bolt hole. You have to be very carefull not to go overboard, you don't want to put too much heat locally on the flywheel. Hopefully you chased the threads prior to install and used a quality fastener? that will be your saving grace when the heat breaks down the loctite and actually turns it into a bit of a lubricant to help you then remove the bolt with just the friction of a screwdriver on the ragged head or with a screw extractor in a variable speed drill set anti-clockwise.
If no luck, might be one of those things best just removed and taken to someone with a solid mill to remove rather than waste more time trying things to no evail for a whole wasted day.
Thanks. I head scratched and thought about it and have arranged for the engine builder to fix it Monday. Snapped flush with nothing protruding on the backside so just too hard.
Quality bolts? Don't know as they have always been on there. Will buy new bolts..........
PS - for the Adelaide people I give Milton Engines a big tick.
Does anybody know how to adjust the pressure setting on a VDO adjustable oil pressure switch?? I bought a VDO 430.135 which is supposed to be preset to 35psi but adjustable from 25-50psi. Seems to be switching the light off as soon as the oil pressure gets in the very low teens.
Its the same as the one on the front page of the PDF that Mickas posted. Maybe I have to pry off an end cap. Oh well. Once the motor is running tomorrow I can have a play.
can only be one end (the end that doesnt screw into the car) and that is just a smooth button looking thing. Will play when car back from tuning. Bit over it all tonight
EDIT: just received this from the seller
In the top of the pressure switch there is a rubber grommet( opposite end to the thread) Remove the grommet and you will have access to the alen key drive to adjust the pressure switch point. The 35psi switch can be screwed in to increase pressure upto 50 psi or screw out to decrease pressure down to 25psi. If screwing out be careful not to screw out too far- rubber grommet should still fit in Hoping this helps
