determinig correct engine position

Hi,
what is the process for locating the engine in the engine bay.
I dont trust my mounts on my wcxm I cant seem to get it right.
Does the 2 L sit along the cars center line or is it off set ?

i am thinking of setting the engine and rewelding the mounts so that
it sits correctly.

What do people do when they install other engines into cars ?
how do they determine the correct location and angle?

Thanks
Emil

Roger,
Hi hope you are well, I have been spending time trying to sort out my front end without much joy.

The x-member and engine came out of a mk2 and is now in a mk 1 . It seemed to fit in the mk2 ok, however i put new bushes in xmember as the old ones were distorted a fair amount. probably the reason It seemed ok in the mk2.

tried to test fit it all and found I couldnt locate the 2 engine mounts and the rear at the same time.
It turns out my front end was out a bit so I had to rectify that
Deduced that the the rail was out, So I redrilled the front mounts after some measuring.

but after all this and some messing with the mounts It still seems wrong.
Think I will set up a standard xmember and see if my problem goes away.
really wanted to use the wcxm :( Figured i would set the engine in the correct place and then look at refabricating the mounts to suit.

rgds

Have you got the mounts on the correct sides? There is a short one and a long one and if they are not correct the bellhousing will be hard up against the firewall. Sorry can't remember which side is which .

i remember setting mine up ,
idealy you want the engine sitting as close as you can towards the drivers side
without fouling the exhaust or steering , you want as much clearance as you can get
on the side of the webbers , also helps with starter mtr
and keep it as far back as possible
if you have to cut n shut the mounts so be it . at least yu get it siting where yu want
the other thing is get it as low as you can , sump to x member is limiting factor
and depends on what sump yu use
hope this helps
