Rusty camshaft

My pinto has been sitting idle for a few years and has developed some minor rust pittingon the camshaft lobes.
Is there a safe, non destructive method to remove the pitting,or am I better off obtaining another cam?
I am unsure of the grind on this one,but have been told that the engine was strong, torquey and would sit on 7000 all night when it was in the old rally car.

If it's pitted, throw it and get another. It won't last.

My engine sounds like a similar spec to yours. I have a Kent RL32 in mine which works well.
It gives good midrange grunt and has consistently put down over 90kwatw on various dynos. Peak power is just under 7000rpm so nice and safe for non steel bottom ends.
Would be interested to hear what others suggest though.

Just tell everybody that the pits in the lobes are for oil retention........
