The choke assembly is dodgy?
Is it auto choke or manual?
Also if it takes a few minutes of cranking before it even want's to start, maybe you have a fuel drainback problem. So it's not even trying until you get some fuel back up into the carb.

It's an automatic choke. I've just made it so that the choke butterflies don't even close at all now so i won't have to worry about that. I'll see how it goes when it's cold again and let you know.
I do have to replace all the fuel lines as they are pretty old and i'd like to keep it from going up in a ball of flames.
Admittedly i do have the fuel filter on the wrong way around, after i found out i've tried to pull it off but it's not budging lol. Need to cut it off and replace the lines. They are actually two different sorts of rubber tubing too, one isn't even a fuel line and it's now rock solid.
Could the filter being on backwards be a problem causing it?

The filter being on backwards won't be helping your situation and yes replace any old lines and the right new one's before you have a very bad situation on your hands. Your car wouldn't be the first to burn to the ground.
