To extend on what llew says, the restrictions are not applied equally to all viscosities. 5w50 can have more zinc than a 10w30.

Llew I sent a couple of oil samples in for testing recently one being unused Joe Gibbs BR and a sample from a 2lt rally engine and the new oil came back with abnormal levels of phosphorous and zinc with them believing they were too high for normal standards lololol

I picked up 4 quarts of Joe Gibbs "Driven XP4" and a FRAM race filter today. All for less than $100
I'll feel much safer now when upping it
Thanks for the help :)

Forget the Fram filters and just stick with a Ford AFL1, the Fram's have cardboard ends which distort and allow the oil to bypass

The K&N one from memory was ok but you buy the Ford one from a Ford dealer and of the cheaper ones it's the best I've seen. If Gary's got one on it'll be the last one

Cheers Danny. I see the Ryco has cardboard ends too? The Sakura is metal though.
I went for the K&N filter out of convenience and dropped out the penrite today/ filled with XP4. The fumes from the car smell goooood

Fumes from the car?
Shouldn't make any difference as it's not Castrol R, it's probably the fumes from being rich and too much fuel pressure

Fuel pressure & tuning is spot on. The oil has a different smell to it

so, for those who know, whats wrong with the cardboard ends of these filters, especially in a situation where the filter is replaced every race meeting? I acknowledge everyone is not doing that?

Haydon how much fuel pressure is it running as it was running far too rich at Willowbank

2.5lbs. Since willowbank I have gone a size bigger in my idle jets to 55F9 because the carbs were backfiring at low revs on hwy and around town due to low air speed. Head bench flowed 191hp

How many turns out were the idle mixture screws before you changed the idle jet
2.5psi is still too high
Forget about what the hp figures are from a flow bench as they're just a pipe dream and don't mean that much as there are far too many variables

I know the 50's were about right in relation to idle mixture screw adjustment but the 55's are still ok. I quoted the flow bench figure to explain the low air speed, nothing more. 2.5lb is fine, everyone has a different opinion on the matter. In my case I trust the person who built & tuned my engine, Peter Baguley from Performance Thumpers & Escorts.
http://www.performancethumpersescorts.com.au/index.htmlPeter's done a great job with the engine and the performance is fantastic.

Haydon Weber needle and seats are designed to run 1.5-2psi or they will "fuel up" and fume which is what you car was doing at Willowbank. Flow bench figures don't mean anything to explain the idle as it all comes down to how it is tuned
