Problem identified!
The tank is the original Bathurst dry break one which is 100 litres and sits in the boot. Turns out the fire retardent foam that fills the tank has collapsed due to old age. It's clogging the fuel filter and basically the engine is running out of fuel.
I replaced it about 10yrs ago after spending months trying to find a mysterious miss (sounds familar). At that time it was about 15 yrs old so I think the foam has about a 10yr life span.
So job for tonight is to take the top off the tank and try to remove as much of the foam as possible. It's a @#$% of a job as when it breaks down it acts just like sand.
Good thing is that it when it was running right is easily managed 8000rpm in top into turn one, so it should be a rocket ship once it gets fuel. Hopefully Brad will have a better day tomorrow.
Thanks all for your responses.

So it wasn't the heat, it was throwing it around and stirring things up in the tank. Sounds like a fuel pressure gauge would have outed this demon a bit sooner. That's something to keep in the back of my mind...
So are you going to replace the foam eventually or just put a bladder in it?
