Thanks Roger,
The method I use is similar to that except I use a dial gauge to measure lift at TDC rather than the distance from the head. I then check actual opening and closing events to ensure that everything is where it should be. On one occasion I used a spirit level on the head first and then on the cam lobes and leveled the cam this way. I was surprisingly close when I measured it properly afterwards.

Yep my method is as per the esslinger method. Steel rule across the lobes at tdc, mesure down so that they are equal, then re-tighten pulley.
