Locking Rings on TRW forged pistons
I am assembling a set of TRW forged pistons and I beam conrods which have a floating gudgeon pin for a pinto. The pistons come with 16 locking rings to hold the pin in place. There are 16 pins so two at each side of each pin must be fitted. The only problem is how to compress the rings to get them to fit. I have ordered a set of Cosworth Mahle circlips which are supposed to be better but I have to get the engine assembled this weekend so cannot wait. Should I wait for the circlips or try to fit the locking rings?
Tom TRW's came with 16 circlips and all you used were a set of internal circlip pliers like you would for a standard 1600 pushrod piston
Also don't forget to machine the lumps off them and run them as a flat top!!!!
Thank you for the response. As you say the TRWs came with 16 clips but not the ones which can be inserted with a pliers but I was able to do it after finding the following guide.
Yeah I stopped using Spiralocks because they are a pain in the ass as most of the american piston componies use them as they don't usually come out once they are in
To put them in all you have to is pull them apart so they appear uncoiled and then you start at one end and then feed them into the groove as the locks are bigger in diameter than the groove and having them extended holds them tighter in place.
Also you need to fit two on each end of the wrist pin using 16 in total
To get them out you will need a pick or a hook and pull from one end and uncoil the lock outwards and don't worry if they are still uncoiled as that is the way they should be
When I do them I use a Snap On pick and hook set and yes you will stab yourself while practicing on the first couple so don't panic and get blood on the rings or in the grooves.
Danny
PS Next time you get pistons get them made to suit Wire Locks as they are much easier
Thank you for the answer. I will try to get the second set of clips fitted today.
What piston ring end gap do you use with Moly rings. I am planning on using 0.38mm for the top ring, 0.40 for the second ring and 0.38 for the oil control rings.
I have looked again and I just cannot fit the second clip at each side of the gudgeon pin. Either the pin is too long or the groove is not wide enough but all pistons are the same. I will have to fully dis-assemble a piston to see.
Tom if it were me I would shorten the wrist pin and widen the grooves as they can break and that is why they use two
Now I should add that I've never actually seen them break but I have heard stories
When you shorten the pins have them about .020" too short so you have a little side clearence as pins flex under load and push the locks in hard distorting the alloy around the locks and make it harder to get the pins out on your next rebuild
As far as ring gaps it really depends on what the ring manufacturers recommends as but I would have thought you would be running in the vecinity of .018" on the top ring .020-.22" on the second and at least .016" on the oil rings as it's always better to run a couple of thou too much than too little.
Make sure you run slightly more clearence on the 2nd ring and don't file the oils if they're too tight as you will need to get different oils
