PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation. If you remove the system then you're not flushing the crankcase with fresh air. Probably not a problem on a racecar but on a regularly used road car (apart from being illegal) you'd run the risk of early oil contamination.
Airflow typically is: Filtered(carby) side of air filter-hose-Rocker cover cap-crankcase-oil separator-pcv-hose-inlet manifold-combustion-exhaust
The PCV valve limits airflow and provides a means of sealing the line in case of a backfire.
Most races mandate a catch tank if you're not using pcv

I know how the system is supposed to operate, but the lynx intake manifold I have has no provision for PCV. It only has one barb on it for the brake booster and that only sucks into two of the runners because it's a crossover manifold. When running a PCV line into the intake manifold, the blow-by needs to be distributed across all four runners. That's not possible with most of the manifolds that use side draft webers.
My car is a weekend car only, so early oil contamination doesn't worry me. It's just the smell of the crankcase that bothers me. After doing a bit more research I think a catch can would help reduce the smell because it condenses the oil vapours.

It may help a bit, try venting the tank as low as possible and seal up your firewall as good as you can. Run your rocker breather to the tank as well.

Yeah, you could be right. I'd be hooking it up anyway, even if it were only to get rid of the smell.

Yeah, if only I could hook it up. Ah well, oil catch can will have to do
