New Mk1 Escort road car project

PostPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 9:27 pm

I am about to start my Mk1 Escort road car project.

I have a Mk1 coupe shell, plus these parts:
Fuel injected n/a YB cosworth engine
dry sump system
quaife 5 speed gearbox
floor mounted pedal box
adjustable lower control arms
steel forest arch flares
MoTeC M800 ECU, PDM and Dash

I have attached a photo of the car, and the engine...

Anyhow, I am looking to change the rear end to 4 link, watts link, turrets. Any suggestions on where to get these bits from

I also want to add in an alloy fuel tank in the boot (with the spare wheel cutout).

same deal, where would I get one of these?

thanks for any help that you can be...

regards,

Jamie

Nice project Jamie,

For 4-link kits, etc.......

If you can afford them Gartrac would be the best...

IMHO then it would be a Toss up between Torsten at GRP4 Fabrications and Phil and Mick Squires at R.A.C.E

Looks great mate,

What are the plans for the car? Race or just fast street?

I have bought some stuff fro these guys and have been impressed by their service - http://www.motorsport-tools.com/escort-mk1-mk2

The engine will go in as is...

hi/low injection, race cams, custom forged 12.5:1 pistons, argo rods, etc, etc...

the AP twin plate clutch may not be much fun on the road, but Ill try it first before I worry about perhaps changing it.

It is basically going to just be a road car, with occasional sprints, hillclimbs or tarmac rally... maybe..

mainly a road car.

Hey mate,

Do you think the inlet runners will fowl on the inner guard?

Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Are you heading to Sandown next month?

Yep Escort will be there! - if it doesn't break something between now and then...

Paul's having a steer, will come find you in the pits.

Should leave the mk1 in that granny spec. With your old sports sedan motor it would be the ultimate sleeper!

I put a reasonable SR20det and 5 speed into the escort before I sold it.

I was never going to get what I thought was a reasonable dollar for the escort with the cosworth in it.

I was able to make the escort sports sedan just as fast with the SR20 in it, so it was still a good car, just without the really expensive bits...

It is now being used in sprints in Tasmania.

I thought about leaving it granny spec, but I really want it to be a tough looking car. So it is going to be all white, with the forest arch flares.

I was thinking of putting the light blue 'Esso mk1 rally car' stickers on the car also.

I want to use 15*8 wheels with the forest arch flares on the Mk1.

Any suggestions on what wheels would be good for this car?

I am thinking minilite style wheels, but am open to suggestions..

regards,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Mine are 15x8 Superlite GTR. They're slightly lighter than the Superlites, but what I like most is they come without the polished edge (normally between 70 - 100 mm). They're a completely powder coated finish all the way to the edge which I reckon looks period/better.

You should be able to get them delivered brand new for between $1000 - $1100 in choice of colour.

Couple of pictures of them on my car here:

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2057&start=20

If money were no object I've always loved the Compomotive ML.

Check the two pictures at the bottom of this page:

These cars look awesome with 7's on the front and 8's on the back, and I don't mind the gold.

You'll have to run second hand Yokohama's off the datto on it!

Cheers,

Mick.

yep, I am getting 15*8 so that I can use the old Datsun 1200 coupe tyres...

Are the superlite and superlite GTR both from performance wheels? I could only find superlite..

Peter..

Thanks, they look right, but I might try local first, shipping wheels can get quite expensive!

Hi Jamie,

Yep Performance Superlite GTR.

They're listed on the website under 'products' and 'motorsport'.

Finally got some more done on the Mk1....

The car is on the hoist, The drivetrain is all out, the interior is all gone...

The wiring is all out, certainly isnt going back in given that I removed it with side cutters!

Next step is to remove the windows and headlining.

then to remove both front guards, and the bubble, which seems a little rusty around the edges. It is about the only rust in the car which is great...
