Cam's Escorts in the dirt

With the rally car's engine still a work in progress, I decided to take the Mk1 out for a run at my clubs Khanacross last Sunday.

Being a bit of a last minute thing we didn't have a big turnout, but on the upside we got lots of tests in!

Unfortunately there was no one else in my class (road tyres) and with the dampness in the morning I couldn't get within ten seconds of any of the guys on rally tyres. So with nothing to play for, I went for a bit of entertainment value on my last run.

Thanks to my 8yo son for the fine video.... thumbup.gif

I reckon they should take a second off your run for every .1 of a second you're sideways.....that would be much better!

My old car club would choose a bend and the official photographer would give another award for best style on that bend at the finish....Its the only award I ever won because the car usually broke down before the finish!

What spec is the MK1? It looks to me like it needs to sit a bit higher at the front for non-bitumen events..

Mark

Your right Mark, it is a bit low in the front.

I just finished putting a pair of Capri legs, vented discs, adjustable top mounts and konis in it for our hill climb next month. All done with stuff I've had sitting in the shed for years or bought from nice people on this forum (and others) at good prices (thank you all).

I have a set of "Danny M" spec rear springs that'll be going in the rear this week.

Engine is std 1600 with extractors and DGV, so it's slow but fun.

No more dirt duties for "Brown Sugar".

She now has her new "Danny M" spec rear springs installed as well as the capri front struts, adjustable strut tops etc. So it's the black stuff only for her now!

Only problem is she's about half an inch lower at the rear than the front.....

It looks good, no need for twin cam guards
Are you using standard or low springs with the capri struts?

As this cars just a weekend toy, the suspension's been done "on the cheap" using stuff I'd collected over the years or things bought at a good price off the forums or ebay.

Front springs are pedders, lower and much heavier than the std springs that were on the struts. They've been lying around the shed for years.

The fact they're probably designed for the weight of an Essex, and the k-mac adjustable tops add a little height, means the front didn't come down as much as I thought it would.

Finally the new Fourd Performance built pinto is in the rally car and running! As usual though, things didn't quite go to plan on the dyno. Bizarrely it has a huge "miss" at low revs and light throttle, a bit like the hardest "hard cut" you could imagine. You'd think something so brutal would be easy to diagnose but sadly no.
On the positive side though, we got in a few power runs and she managed 105 ATWKW at only 6500 RPM and with just 22 degrees of advance. With another 1000 RPM and 8-10 degrees of advance it should release a few more!

so when are you getting out on the dirt to see how it really goes?

Cheers Scott. It certainly looks very promising, if they can just find this problem. I spoke to Yavuz at UniGroup earlier and he said he'll spend some time on it tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

If all goes well will give her a run this Sunday in a demonstration kharna at the local showground.

Got the car home last night and initial driveway tests confirm what the dyno suggested, this thing goes like smelly brown stuff off a shovel. Once a compatibility problem between the computer and dissy was solved, she made 153.9 RWHP (113 KW?). The consensus is that the exhaust (2.25 inch) and possibly extractors are still holding it back.

I've got a grin a mile wide and can't thank Paul T and Yavuz enough. Over the years I've dealt with so many people who have promised so much and delivered very little, it's a refreshing change to deal with people who really know what they're doing. bravo.gif
