It is so tempting to put in some snide, negative response to Danny's comment but why would I want to lower myself to that level. I am not interested in building a show car or the fastest group n car yet. I have bought a car that I considered value for money, that will put in reasonable lap times and that I can have fun in and get my license endorsed in without spending a lot more than the car is worth. I am aware that the car needs some work but still think it represents value for money and will retain some re-sale value. It is a race car that, with some minor tidying, will present as well as most of the cars on the circuit. With the regulations the way they are at present if I wanted win everything including best presented car I would have spent a small fortune building up a Porsche or RX2.
Danny is obviously very knowledgeable in building and driving very fast Escort's and has helped many people with his willingness and openness to share his hard earned knowledge but his willingness to hang 5hit on other peoples cars and ideas is, I think, detrimental to this forum. Maybe it would be better to helpandencourage other people rather than to give smart ass comments. The world of Escort ownership is a varied one and not all of us want to build a naturally aspirated pinto or yb hill climb car. Over the years I have watched this forum with much interest and have enjoyed his somewhat bigoted comments and have had many laughs at the exchange of banter between Danny and other forum members. I hope that Danny will continue to share his vast Escort knowledge with other people but believe that he needs to learn to pull his head in and keep his personal opinions to himself at times.
Cheers Peter
Peter it wasn't meant as a snide comment it's just stating fact as that is the way all of Errol's cars are and some of them started out as ordinary shells and have had a number of hits over the years, it wasn't meant to offend or be negative just replying to your own comment that you're going to tidy it up, as I know my own cars are no stunners as few here will tell you
Lets get some entertainment going, it's been so boring recently. Most posts have been normal, Danny stop taking those "Chill Pills" and give us some good banter. I'm bored
Well the car is nearly ready to have a run. I have been away on holidays in Europe and whilst I was away Colin, my brother at Cam Automotive, has been going over the car. There was a small crack in the sump so he pulled the motor out to repair it. Whilst it was out he pulled a couple of caps and it all looks fresh and good. The gear box had a bit too much metal in the oil so he pulled that down and had to replace 1st and 2nd gears as well as the synchro's. The gear shift had about as much feel as a VW beetle so replaced the bush. He drained and replaced all fluids, checked all wheel bearings and went over the whole car. There was a heap of little things needed doing as we expected. No hose clamps on breather or fuel lines, no split pins on front hub nuts, no wiring to front indicators, tacho didn't work over 6,000. There were a lot of bolts that were too short and nylocs were not touching the nylon, other bolts were way too long. Exractors had been lengthened and were cracked on the welds so repaired, gusseted and ceramic coated them. Windscreen had about 10 cracks in it so had a new one fitted. One headlight was a light weight item with half the glass missing so fitted a new one. Indicator lenses were in similar condition. Did a fair bit of tidying up with wiring. The only thing we didn't expect was the gearbox so overall not that bad for buying a second hand race car. We ran it up on the dyno and it seems pretty strong so I can't wait to get it out on the track. It currently has a 4.7 diff fitted and want to fit a 4.1 hence my wanted ad, then I realised that my white Twin Cam has a 4.1 lsd fitted so we are going to put that in. I will keep the 4.7 as it might suit Winton and will fit one of my standard 3.7's to the white car as it will probably not see competition again. There is a state race series at the Island on the 25th-26th September so will aim for that. I will try to get out for a practice run before then.
Cheers Peter
Don't worry between John and myself we are a major sponsor of Colin's lifestyle. He never forgets to charge for work done.
I had a couple of major wins today. I was told the car had a Quaife ATB diff centre but when we pulled it out to change the ratio we found it is a plate type lsd. Bonus! We then pulled the centre out of the white twink which I was also told when I bought it had a Quaife in it only to find another plate lsd. Double bonus!!
I'll try and get down next week and take some pics.
Cheers Peter
Well it took a lot longer than anticipated but I have finally entered my first event in the Nc twink. 2 weeks time at Sandown for a round of the Vic state series. After a fairly hectic last 12 months and a move of house I am at last getting back behind the wheel and am starting to get excited about it. I even blew the dust off the Elan last week and took it for its first drive in over a year. The new house has a 6 car garage so I am able to keep a few more toys at home so hopefully with them in my face a bit I will be more motivated to use them. Now if I could only find an extra couple of days in each week. Cheers Peter
Had my first run in the Nc car on the weekend at Sandown. Didn't change anything on the set up of the car from when I bought it and just wanted to see how it felt. I hadnt had a drive since May last year so was quite nervous and rusty. Managed to qualify ahead of Peter Owens RS1600 by .8 of a second and was very happy to post a 1.31.1. Car felt quite good but was lacking top end power compared to the RS. I would loose 3 or 4 car lengths down both straights then have to work like mad through the corners to catch up again. First race I gave it too much off the line and it just sat there wheel spinning. Pete passed me down the straight and I had a fairly lonely run by myself. Early on the accelrator started sticking a bit and then I started getting a fair bit of shudder under brakes. The car was a bit of a hand full at the end of the back straight. The best I could post in Race 1 was a 31.5 whilst Pete managed a 30.8 some 3 seconds faster than he'd gone at previous meets. Back in the pits we found a broken return spring on the carbs and thought I'd warped a disc as the discs were almost blue. We were going to go back to the workshop and get the spares to fit when we found a heap of slop in the r/h ball joint. Off to the workshop, grab a new one, back to the track and fit it ready for Sunday. Saturdays sunshine was replaced with Sundays rain so it was on with the wets. Very nervous to be having a very wet drive for my second ever race. Once again missed the start with too much wheelspin but once it hooked up I found myself catching and passing a heap of cars. Visability was almost zero and everyone was quite tentative into turn 1 but we all got through. Managed to sneak up the inside of a couple more cars before the back straight. Managed to get past 8 cars on the first lap then got stuck behind a Charger. I was greatful the Charger was almost the same colour as the Twinc as I'm sure we got close enough to just swap paint a couple of times. He would disappear into the mist down the straights and then I'd be all over him through the corners. As soon as we got on the straight again he would just pull out and pass me. Frustrating but a lot of fun. Very happy with 10th fastest lap time in a fairly strong field. 9 seconds a lap fatser than Pete but he was on old tires. Race 3 was very wet also and I managed to get a reasonable start. Got past Les Walmslys very strong Charger but he caught me just before turn 1. The next few laps were similar to race 2 except for the colour of the Charger baulking me. I managed to get past him on the 3rd lap and got enough of a gap to hold him off up the back straight. Coming on to the front straight I had managed to pull a healthy gap when out came the sc boards. Peter had gone off at turn 1 and was stuck in the litter. 3 laps behind the safety car with the Charger right behind me. On the restart he just pulled out and past me and I spent the rest of the race stuck behind him again. I could get past him and hold him out half way down the straight but then he would go past me again. Very entertaining racing. Best thing of all was being able to drive it onto the trailer Sunday arvo with nothing to fix. Cant wait now for the next race at the Island in October. Cheers Peter
