Here we go again, while my work collegues are getting pissed at the pub I used the early finish as an opportunity to get the old engine back out. I think I can safely say this will be the last engine swap this year, I reckon i've pulled the engine 7 times in 2012. I can now get it out in less than an hour without any outside help.
Danny: Both engines are now fitted with Cometic Head Gaskets
The good engine has had the sump drilled and tapped for a oil temp gauge, and have got a 35psi switch for the oil pressure warning light so hopefullly I won't do so much damage if I blow an oil line again!
Old engine (red Rocker cover) was honed, re-ringed and fresh bearings.
First event was the AEM SuperKhana were the diff let go.
I then got the new engine (blue rocker cover) finished and fitted and fired. After a bolt check I managed to nip up the cam using too longer bolt on the oil spray bar and when re-start bent two valves. On the dyno it then developed a misfire and head came off again and we shimmed up the valve springs.
I then entered the Targa South West and the flywheel came loose due to kent cams supplying the wrong torque figures and #3 conrod eat the dipstick.
I got the crank repaired and cleaned up the internals re-fitted the new engine (silver rocker cover) and entered the McRae Sprint trial event and blew the oil line off the cooler spinning two bearings and buggering the crank again.
I then re-fitted the old engine (red rocker) for the 1st of the McRae Sprint Series and the VSCC Stampede - it was during these two events that the car start using masses of water and I discovered the HG was blown.
Finally round 2 of the McRae sprint series was run still with the old engine but new HG and the car had no issues!
Unfortunately during all of the above I also sat in a Mk2 for the West Australian gravel rally series, during the Forest Rally we started swapping times with Neil Bates prior to snapping a rear leaf. We were than back for the Collie rally were we won the class, then confidently entered the Lewana Rally were we tipped it end over end then side over side whcih finished off the year for that car.
Let's hope you got all the bad stuff over and done with in 2012!! Is a 35psi oil switch a readily available item? Mine is currently in teh 20's which makes it pretty useless in my opinion.
I got the good engine fitted prior to my Adelaide Xmas and New Year trip. Tonight I found time to fit the spotlights with my new quick release brackets
I have started the engine and done the first heat cycle. I now need to spanner check and recheck the rockers clearances and hopefully go for a drive this weekend.
I had a good start to 2013 with 4 trouble free runs at the McRae Twilight Rally Sprint last night. I have finally managed to finish an event with the "good" engine without it eating a dipstick, throwing the flywheel or blowing an oil line
Been busy with work and house renovations but still managed to get out to play tonight in the last round of the 2012/13 McRae Sprint: http://youtu.be/8qrqFFDHico
Came 3rd in the 2ltr 2WD class for the series behind a insane Toyota Sprinter and a Westfield.
Last weekend I dusted off the white Mk1 and dragged her 420Km down to Albany for the VSCC round-the-houses regularity. I had a great weekend thrashing all sorts of old school machinery. Unfortunately I copped an infrigement for going side-by-side into the end corner at the end of the back straight which the stewards considered dangerous. I now have a one event suspension where I have to officiate and not compete
My "dangerous" overtake can be seen here: http://youtu.be/822QTMHGQF4 (the Z driver claimed I dived down under brakes - I was then found to be at fault and he was let off)
nah - I was called into the clerk of course straight after the race (oops = "regularity event") - I only downloaded the in-car footage afterwards!
Interestingly I was told to admit liability there and then to avoid a CAMS tribunal hearing and which could "cost you thousands". If I had seen the in-car I would never have signed....
My beef is the clerk of course dismissed the Z driver as I was the overtaking car. Subsequently in the video you can see I passed the Z over the round-about and about 2 seconds later we pass the yellow boards. I then hold line, brake and downshift into the corner.
I suspect the Z brakes later and catches me under brakes and hence we are back to being side-by-side. So why do I get penalised and he gets off scott-free when he reality it was him trying to pass me back in the yellow zone?
In the pits after the race the Z driver had sought me out to ask about my engine as he "couldn't believe an escort could just drive past him like that". In front of the clerk-of-course he stated that I came from no-where and he had to brake to avoid an incident -
Anyhow I am happy to miss and officiate at the next VSCC event; but if this is a CAMS penalty then I face missing round 3 of the state rally championship (next cams event - navigating), or Targa West (next Cams event - entry) which will really hurt!
