RSM "reasonably priced car" Idea's

PostPosted: Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:35 pm

As discussed at the recent RSM BBQ.

Collectively we thought about getting a "communal" type car to dual enter in various events, motorkhana's, trials etc. Have some guest drivers who may visit from time to time.

Maybe something a bit out of the norm. Danny's Fiat :?:

Lets see what's out there, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, all wheel drive, turbo....!

The only rules with it being a communal car is that you break it you fix it.

Lets find out who will be the RSM version of the "STIG"

Thoughts everyone?

If you adopt the - you break it you fix it rule, then shouldn't we stick with Escorts so there are spares on hand.

Just a query - but what if some 'does a Brock' - you know where the car is handed over to someone else and it pops something on the out lap. Repsonse being - it was Ok when I had it - I don't know what he's done.

I think we should stick to an Escort, as between us all we have the parts and know how to fix just about anything.

So what sort of events are we going to do in this thing? I thought the idea was to keep it pretty standard?

Agree on the Escort and keeping it stock. Maybe an old cortina may be the way to go, cheapish and most parts interchange.

Depends on how silly we all want to go this idea.

I like the idea of a 1600 Esky, different to what we drive usually.

Events I was thinking of was some motorkhana's, gymkhana's etc given our reluctance to take the "trailer queens" on dirt.
Special k's probably got some old rubber laying around :?:
Why not the german gemini Steve...still using it to cut the grass at home

valve bounce " IS " the rev limiter on any std kent engine
& i might remind you all that a good sumpgaurd is a desirable
modification to the type of car you speak of !!
it should also have "roof racks" as a token gesture for
a roll cage too

Have given this a lot of thought, and I think it could work with the Ghia.

Have sent PM's to a few key people on here with some proposal details.

Appreciate your feedback guy's, good or bad  :(

Lets see if we can get this off the ground next year.

how good would this thing be ??
absolutely no need for a rev limiter & the potential panel damage
is simply mind bogling http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Mitsubishi-Sigma ... 240%3A1318

anyone considered a sigma for track day car? still can buy em cheap as chips........either 2.0ltr for supersprints (under 2ltr class, i think they're 1997cc) 2.6 or go all out and do a turbo "peter wherret special", although the latter requires the pilot to wear lipstick and nail polish...lol
seriously though, it's got a few essentials we love...rear wheel drive, rack & pinion, factory 4 or 5 speed, relatively easy to get parts and panels for, fairly light weight, a guy regularly supersprints one in sydney and he has a ball...and is competitive!!! anyhow PLEASE CONSIDER AND HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS ALL....

WHOOPS,

my 2 cents worth.

These things usually come up when everyone is on about their 6th stubby.....and at that time they are a GREAT idea..

No doubt you would be able to put together a share car for nearly nothing, Marks idea of a 1600 Mk2 sounds solid but then..... the wheels start to fall off........

where does it get stored? its going to be in someones way all the time.

I would assume its going to be unregistered, which means it will be trailered everywhere, more mucking around for those that might use it than sticking their own car on their trailer both of which they already have at their own home versus somewhere across town where it will be stored?

David W is bang on the main problem though, of course if you break it you fix it, sounds simple yeah? Oh look its spun a bearing (promise I never turned the rev limiter off!), who fixes that something like that?

Main problem I see though is the time taken to do even basic maintenance. You all already have cars that take up a huge amount of time being maintained (let alone rebuilt - Nev) let alone looking after a shared hack. My bet is the first time a diff gets broken that it is still sitting broken a month later as everyone is flat out with their own cars....

From what I have seen all the guys at Mt Cotton (ie the regulars on here) get on really well, do you think you will still get on as well if someone either breaks the car doing something stupid or takes months to fix something they were responsible for.......

Food for thought.

Hang on I've just had my 6th stubby, I reckon you go with a 1300 4 door, no rev limiter, just pull one plug lead off, no one could break that surely??

Cheers

Shaun B

Nev's idea of using the ghia is great as it will be road registered but from everyone's ideas it was never intended to be built to try and kill the thing. just something to see how we all go in the same car around various tracks , hillclimbs and motorkhana's.
Also to get some of the spectators a little more involved, Craig M, and perhaps even any visiting dignatorys from interstate and accross the "ditch".
If we all treat it with a degree of respect we should all be friendly at the end of 2009.
We are aware of the fact that there will be a degree of wear and tear but if it gets crashed its your responsibility.

Anyone want to comment after Nev's PM with what we are thinking :?:
