My First Mk2

I’ve got 6 Mk1’s at the moment in varying states and owned a few in the past but this is the first Mk2 I’ve ever owned. I bought it recently from a friend of mine who bought it earlier this year. He only had it for 2 weeks when it was stolen and resprayed with a spray can to disguise it, the seats, belts, extinguisher, plates etc were ripped out of it and it was found some weeks later abandoned. They managed to get all the paint off it but it still has a bit of overspray left to deal with and a few battle scars that need fixing. He got it going again then did a couple of race meetings and it ran the mains and screwed the crank so he lost interest. It was sent off to be rebuilt and advertised for sale. When he told me what it had in it I new I couldn’t build it for anywhere near what he was asking and I just couldn’t help myself, I had to have it.

I picked it up with a fresh unused engine with brand new FIA seats and belts for probably close to what the engine is worth alone. I’ve since treated it myself to a modified alloy sump and floating pickup just for insurance as it’s an expensive engine and didn’t want to take any risks.

Some brief specs

Sierra Crank
O Ringed block
Grower Rods
Wisco pistons
Eslinger Roller rockers / cam
Big valves
Extensive head work
Twin DCOE’s
Tilton twin plate clutch
Lightweight flywheel
Quaife 4 speed box
Quaife diff
Custom 2 linked rear end
Adjustable TCA’s
Adjustable platform front struts
Adjustable top mounts
4 pot callipers front
2 pot callipers rear
Alloy Radiator

Had a skid last weekend at a sprint meeting at the Pukekohe track but the weather was absolutely crap. Huge spin on the first lap going into Ford Mountain in the rain with the Mrs in the passengers seat and as we went around I casually said we are going into the Armco backwards here but managed to gather it up somehow but have no idea how!

Not a hugely enjoyable day because of the weather but good to get out in it all the same.

g,day kris , it looks fantastic in those colours especialy with the logo on the rear 1/4
considering your history with the mk 1,s
you should keep it the way it is .

Yeah it doesn't look bad I guess but it's gotta come off for some business related sign writing so I can justify having it as a company car

I would never have thought MK1 stripes would look any good on a MK2,
but I think on yours they do 8)
They do make it stand out, there are so many plain white MK2's around, it's good to see something a bit different

Can't you keep the stripes and add the signwriting to the bonnet and roof? or under the stripes?

Yep I could and that's how the previous owner had it but it wont fit in with the overall scheme of what I have planned. I'm going for a more all over look like the V8's etc rather than the odd stickers here and there but first I have to extract some money from one of my suppliers!

Went and did a tarmac hillclimb last weekend. Did the first run and this is what happened on my way back into the pits. (a farmers paddock) The car bottomed out over a bump and hit a big partly exposed rock. @#$% happens I guess. Instant oil pressure loss! I expect it will be all good with the bearing as I was only going slow and as soon as I registered that big red light on the dash was on, switched it off. I’ll take a cap or two off just to check anyway. Have someone sorted to fix it so just need to pull it apart again - a job I don’t need right now!

Still managed 3rd in class out of 9 and only got beaten for 1st place on the 4th run.

Chris are you sure that wasn't a rock laden with plastic explosives????

Good result anyway mate! So where are the photos of the car in the new paint scheme?

Yep it does look like that doesnt it. It's coming off tonight.

Haven't done the signwriting yet. Too scared to spend any money as it's been extremey quiet at work. Don't think it's been this quiet before in all the years I've been in business.
