Hello Jason,
"...also in my search for my cars history I phoned ford about getting a letter of verification sent to me (thanks Peter M) they were very good and even knew the dealer who originally sold the car. "
You can also apply with the Roads and Traffic Authority in your state and request under Freedom of Information for names and current addresses of all past owners of your exact vehicle.
We have just completed this exercise with the RTA in NSW for our RS2000. They were exremely helpful and with past owner's agreements we were provided a very detailed list of all past owners for the last 25 years. All for a very negligable fee which is a very good investment.
This is helping to format the history of our car. Don't forget these cars are increasingly valuable. We found past owners from many years ago are usually more than happy to provide interesting info and are happy to know that their old car is still surviving in the hands of enthusiasts. Don't forget they have many memories in your car too, long before you owned it!
If you need more details how to make formal application let me know and I will put it up for everyone to see. (not sure if you are interested)
Great work Jason !
