Dragway wheel Re-chroming...

Hi All,

We've been quoted $300 per wheel to rechrome some 14" dragway "splatts (i believe they are called)"

I think this is a bit exhorbitant. Can anyone recommend anywhere that acid dips and rechromes wheels? Or is there another solution?

There is small rust spots appearing under the chrome. We just want to freshen up the wheels.

Hey, I know its been a while since you post but I have had a little experience with them.
Morten and may wheels in sydney quoted me a little cheaper than than that to replace the outer rims with an offset change.
My car not being fairly average thought it was a little expensive, so I moved them myself. well I only did two and discovered getting them to do it would have been the way to go!
- I am not that sure that acid dipping would remove the old chrome? I thought items to be chromed were tumbled in an abrasive stone bath to prep the surface?

- Anyway the centers would probably have to be removed and they are an interference fit and require pressing out with a suitable fixture to protect the delicate aluminium center.
- The bolts are bloody tight and held in with a lot of locktite!!
- On mine I just cleaned them with an acid aluminium cleaner and a brass wire brush which worked a treat at removing the surface rust without scratching the chrome.
- I treated mine with por15's pollished alloy resto kit which is holding up well after at least 12 months in the weather. Unless your wheels are flat like centerlines or something I would suggest spraying the laquer on.
- I also purchased new center caps from dragway which I did not clear coat and were noticibly rusty after less than six months.

I reckon they are great if you are into the period look.
Good Luck!

I have been told by dragway that the EPA has really tightened it's regulations in regards to the overuse of chemicals used in chrome dipping. That has meant an increase in the cost of getting it done.

Dragway no longer send rims away for re-chroming. They sell brand new outers instead, for yes... about $300 each from memory
