Steering Rack shims

Can anyone see a problem with inserting a thicker shim (washer) straight after geared cog before bearing as shown in pic? Current setup has 5shims after bearing then 1fat one and with cover plate tightened the cogs shaft can still be pushed in and pulled out giving a up to 3mm movement.
If I remove some of the thinner shims and insert the washer like Im thinking of doing I believe it will stops the up and down movement, which I think is the cause of some sterring wheel shake under brakes as all my bushes are new.

I rebuilt rack around 4yrs ago with a quick rack in it, but hasnt had a heap of use.
Also realised its missing spacer that goes on after the plastic bush and spring for slipper adjustment?

Can anyone foresee any issues with this or provide some extra guidance?

Also if I nip up rack ends a little will this help with tre drooping?

Rhys,

Adjust the shim stacks until the pinion is slop free, but don't over do it otherwise steering wil get heavier and bearings will wear out.

3mm pinion end play means shims spacers and bearings are in the wrong order. It would certainly make for sloppy steering.

Slipper adjustment is usually adjusted by shims between the cover plate and body. Do this after the pinion is set right, again getting it just right is important for slop free steering without effort.

Check the bush at the left end of the rack housing as this one flogs out easily and makes for seriously poor steering.

Freeplay needs to be removed from the TRE ball bushes. These are spring loaded also.

I never bothered changing bearings, they dont do much work as such, just checked them all and greased up etc.

Important to get rack ends tight when setting up. i do them so rackend will not fall under its own weight.

Rack is lubed with 90 weight oil, so boots/bellows need to be oil tight etc.

Thanks Roger.

So you don't do them up that tight that they need 2.5kg of force to pull them down as per manual? Just tight enough to hold their own weight? Is that with or without TRE on?

Currently mine will drop under their own weight.
