1). 2 litre srtruts will bolt straight in (I will get a pair of large dia. K-Mac strut tops for the 2 litre struts, and I have a Mark 2 1600 sway bar).

You have strut tops sussed. You will need to address the tie rod ends. Mk1 are imperial, Mk2 are metric. Quickest fix is too use Mk2 rack.

2). Is clearances on brake calipers and wheels OK with the 2 litre struts?

They are ok with 13" wheels

3). How will ride height be affected? (i have heard it will drop ride height by 20mm approx.)

Capri struts will lower. 2lt struts depend what springs you have before and after fitting.

4). Any other problems that I should be aware of?

Camber will change but you should be able to adjust for that with the strut tops

5). Would Mark 2 1600 struts be a better proposition?

No

Thanks heaps for your confirmation. I took a look at the Tech article but it didnt have comparisons for the Mark 1, hence my question.

I have a Mark 2 steering rack, so that should suss the imperial / metric problem.

I was intending to use the standard Mark 2 2litre springs. Is this wise or dumb? Any idea on the affect of this on ride height?

IIRC It will sit a little higher
