if I ask really nicely, and put a cherry on top, would you impart your wisdom and experience to us as to why everything is wrong with the tabled proposals. is it the colour? Just in case you get hit by a bus on your upcoming trip and the knowledge is lost to us forever.
The easiest way to put this guys is you're thinking far too much. Glenn stop spending so much time researching things on the internet and get back out in the shed and finish the car as asking questions on so many boards will only make the confusion even worse as rear roll centre on an Escort is something with too many variables where unless you're going to space frame the rear of the car you're not going to be able control everything and no the roll centre doesn't start out being the spring saddles as it also takes in the centre line between the leaf spring mount eyes etc. Now as far as load point sheer on the pivot etc stop thinking too much, and have a look at the stupid taxi's, as I questioned the rod end sizes when I got my first pivot as I thought 3/8" would be too small as my panhard rods ran 1/2" but the reasoning was that it's better to have the rod ends fail than the pivot or have it bend the rails and after watchig the V8 Sports Sedan taxi's thats what they do but if it fails on your Escort with leaves you've still go the leaves to locate so you can finish the event. Of note here is after the accident with the white car I reused everything bar one tube as the bracket was still straight with only some stripped threads for the plates after the diff got smashed into it and the right hand arm needed a new tube which was only a 3/4" chro-moly thin wall tube, all the 3/8" rod ends and bolts etc were fine! One of the reasons we went with a mounting bracket inside the boot was the rules which said 'watts link brackets are free' the other was my previous panhard rod HIT THE FLOOR!!!! so to have a mount from rail to rail under the boot floor would restrict the clearence for the top arm as yes on the white car the right hand rod which is the upper arms used to hit the rail and the boot floor! So to have extra mounting hardware in the road makes things worse. As far as rod angles and heights I spoke to someone at SBR and they tested the arms straight, pick up points in line with the pivot point etc and the drivers could never tell the difference. So fine lets run them straight. For those that thing that with leaf springs it wont make a great deal of difference you're wrong as yes they will try to load up the pivot a little but it isn't noticable but when you change the height of the pivot there is a great deal of difference in the rear handles weight transfer as running the pivot higher will allow the rear to move around and will allow the weight to get transferred back on to the front especially on initial turn in but to the consequence of the rear grip as it may lose grip mid corner and on the exit where as lowering the roll centre will keep the weight on the rear preventing it from 'pitching the rear' but go too low and it will prevent weight transfer onto the front under brakes and initial understeer will creep in to the point where it will tend to lock the front wheels under brakes if you get greedy and go too low.To start with I would set the pivot at the centre of the diff centre and go from there and too be honest I would start lower it till it understeered and then have a fiddle either way as everytime I've done it I've come back about 4mm from understeer point and settled there
