Understeer

As the event progressed last weekend I was getting more and more understeer. I ended up dropping the front tyre pressures 4psi which did help over the last stage.
Now this maybe because I was pushing harder and harder and my entry speeds were increasing, or it could be the front tyres were becoming more and more scrubbed. But it was a PITA and I was having difficulty getting the rear the step out in true escort oversteer fashion - so I need some help in eliminating it.
I'm running 205s 15 R888 GGs, about 3 degrees negative camber, and 4 degrees castor.
Would more negative camber help turn-in?
or do I need more castor?
or something else?
Paul.

On dirt or tarmac?

Did you check the relative pressure change (from cold) between front and rear before dropping the fronts?
How are the fronts wearing - evenly across the tread, outside edges, inside edges? Would be handy if you could beg, borrow or steal a tyre pyrometer for the next event.

Tarmac rally - mostly street and car park stages!
Fronts are wearing evenly across the surface, but you can see the understeer sideways drag on the edges of the blocks and surface.

What size front bar are you running Paul?

Yes understeer is equivalent to the speed one is going.
Of more importance is the castor angle.
This needs to be double figures, territory.
Also if the front tire is not wearing flat, Ive always increased the pressure to increase the grip, which is opposite of everyone will tell you.
There are a lot of variables in above statement, but your stopwatch don't lie.
You rally types should book a day at a closed bitumen track and sort this stuff out.

It's not the fastest way granted but if you drive it kind of as you would on gravel with a bit of a flick the opposite way and overcorrect it on the way into the corner, you get a nice drift through the apex....
I've never understeered in a RWD car on tarmac..but then fun, not times are the important factor in my hobby

My previous driving has always been gravel - i've only been playing with this black stuff for 9months or so now.
The car handled great with the old standard engine, it's only since i've upped the power that i'm now chasing front grip again.
24mm front sway bar, 300lbs front coilovers, bilstien inserts, eccentric tops.
Rear area set of Danny M custom leafs springs with gravel bilstien shocks

Paul I had this same problem with the same spec as you, I had to change my driving style to suit EG turn in a lot later, slow the car down a little and have a better/faster exsit, as I found if I try to drive the car throught the corner it would just push in the front on tight corners Do you have a locked diff? soffen the front shocks could help and if you have a watts lift the roll center it will transfer weight to the front,I hope this makes sence, I'm no expert but it's just trying differant options setups

Hi Belly,
This is a bit of an old thread now - the understeer started after I caged the car and fitted a Kaaz LSD. So I had a stiffer shell and a lot more rear grip. I ordered a smaller sway bar and lighter springs, I started with fitting a SMCKA 20mm "twin cam" bar and anti-dive kit and this immediately eliminated the problem.
A few people commented on the body roll at the previous event so i'm now tempted to try a 22mm bar and 250lbs springs and see if that is a better compromise. Last week at Barbegello it was a tad twitchy at speed so I suspect I have a bit of toe out now too. The car is in lots of pieces at the moment so it will be a while till I drive it again.

Stick with the 22mm sway bar, and don't be afraid to go over 300-400 with the front shocks.
Planting the front tyres to the road with the break will help turning in.
The scandinavian flick is just slow.

Sound like you need more power to balance the rear grip. i am had the same problem with a locked diff and lack of power on gravel it was a understeering pig untill i get more power i am going to try and open or then standard hilux lsd
